Nascido em Kingston 🇯🇲 e reconhecido mundialmente como THE SCIENTIST DUBMASTER, Hopeton Brown é um dos maiores pioneiros da história do dub e da engenharia de som moderna.
Criado dentro do mítico King Tubby’s Studio no fim dos anos 70, Scientist revolucionou para sempre a forma de manipular o som, transformando a mesa de mixagem em um instrumento vivo. Seus graves profundos, ecos infinitos e reverbs espaciais moldaram a estética do dub moderno e influenciaram gerações inteiras dentro do reggae, hip-hop e da música eletrônica.
Álbuns como Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, Scientist Wins the World Cup e Heavyweight Dub Champion seguem como clássicos absolutos da música jamaicana. Ao longo de sua trajetória, trabalhou com nomes históricos como Barrington Levy, Roots Radics, Johnny Osbourne e Augustus Pablo, ajudando a definir o som de uma era inteira.

On this very special day, as a man named Hopeton Overton Brown turns 66, I present his very first dub mix to be released on vinyl. It was published in Jamaica in 1979 on the ‘Roots From The Yard’ label, produced by Junjo Lawes and mixed at King Tubby’s. The track was “Collie Weed” by Barrington Levy; the dub was called “Domino Dub”, sometimes simply “Collie Version”. It marked the beginning of a mixing career that continues to this day. Happy birthday, Scientist!

Topetón Overton Brown (born in Kingston, Jamaica) is a recording engineer and producer who rose to fame in the 1980s mixing dub music as “Scientist”. A protégé of King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock), Scientist’s contemporaries include several figures who, working at King Tubby’s studio, had helped pioneer the genre in the 1970s:
Ruddock, Bunny Lee, Philip Smart, Pat Kelly and Prince Jammy.
