Species finely tuned to specific backgrounds become vulnerable when they move outside those contexts, whether to forage, migrate, or find mates. Environmental change can rapidly turn effective camouflage into a liability. By contrast, species with warning coloration gain freedom of movement. Advertising toxicity allows them to traverse diverse habitats without constant concealment. The trade-off is clear: cryptic strategies optimize safety locally, while conspicuous strategies optimize flexibility globally. Many systems fail not because theyโ€™re unsafe, but because theyโ€™re too constrained to move.

It took a while to decide how I want to express my feelings toward Jane Goodallโ€™s passing โ€” and I am overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude more than anything else. From a very young age, I understood the impact she had not only on science, but on humankind as a whole. I never once thought that becoming a scientist was โ€œjust for boysโ€, in part because I saw someone like Jane paving the way for young women scientists. I wrote reports about her, watched documentaries about her, and idolized her as any budding scientist would. When asked questions about who I looked up to, she topped the list. She has provided so many inspirational quotes, one of my favorites being โ€œYou cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.โ€ Rest in Peace Jane โค๏ธ๐Ÿฆง Photo: National Geographic
