Take a behind the scenes tour of Siding Spring Observatory with @ouranu astrophysics graduate and @mtstromloobservatory outreach astronomer Rishika Nair. The observatory is home to Australia’s leading optical and infrared astronomy facilities, as well as some seriously adorable wildlife. Swipe right to see astrophotography photos of the night sky and the Orion capsule from NASA’s Artemis II mission making an appearance on the Anglo Australian Telescope recently!

Professor Hrvoje Tkalčić is using seismology to peer deep inside Earth, the Moon, and Mars, to reveal new insights into how planets evolve and what it takes to sustain life. The ANU researcher has just begun his @arc_govau Australian Laureate Fellowship to lead a research group on deep Earth and planetary seismology. “It’s a signal to early career researchers that ANU is a place where curiosity-driven research is not only welcome, but it’s actually supported at the highest national level.” #STEM #planetaryscience #earthquakes #seismology

Such clever cockies! New research led by ANU has revealed that wild sulphur-crested cockatoos learn what foods are safe to eat by watching each other. This discovery helps explain how the species thrives in rapidly changing urban environments. Read more at the link in our bio. Credit: Nic Vevers/ANU (frame 1 and 2) Julia Penndorf (frame 3)

This researcher tracks the world’s largest ocean creatures, such as whales, sharks, turtles and seabirds. 🐢 In a project called @megamove_org Associate Professor Ana Sequeira from @scienceanu brought together over 400 researchers from around the world and combined satellite tracking data of around 100 megafauna species. Using this data, her team mapped key areas of the ocean used by these species for feeding, breeding and migration in one of the most comprehensive global efforts to understand how marine megafauna use the ocean. This project has informed conservation and environmental policy of our ocean’s giants. For this work, Associate Professor Sequeira has been named Australia’s National Champion in the Frontiers Planet Prize, placing her among 25 leading scientists worldwide tackling the planet’s most urgent environmental challenges.  Read more at our bio.

Artemis II lifts off! We’re incredibly proud to see ANU expertise supporting humanity’s return to the moon. Today’s successful launch marks a historic and exciting next chapter for human space exploration as the crew onboard the Orion spacecraft blast off to the moon. It is the first time humanity has returned to the moon in more than 50 years and will send humans deeper into space than ever before. ANU is proud to partner with @nasa on this historic mission. The Quantum Optical Ground Station (QOGS) at Mount Stromlo Observatory will track, transmit and receive communications from the crew onboard Orion over the next 10 days. Find out more at the link in our bio. Images: NASA
