Our Department of Geology hosted an engaging public lecture with Dr Herman Van Niekerk titled “On Ice and Uncertain Ground”.
The talk unpacked the real-life challenges of conducting geological fieldwork in Antarctica, and what these extreme conditions teach us about planetary exploration, while highlighting the limits of AI in remote and unpredictable environments.

Yesterday, Prof Farai Nyabadza (HOD- Mathematics & Applied Mathematics Department ) joined UJFM to unpack digital pathogens and how harmful online content can fuel mental health challenges, especially among young people.
From AI-generated misinformation and deepfakes to manipulative online narratives, the discussion unpacked the psychological risks of today’s digital spaces and the urgent need for ethical frameworks, awareness, and practical tools to build digital resilience. 🎙️
