The deadline to apply for the Nihonmachi Alley Design Team is Friday, May 15! SCIDpda is seeking a design team to determine the technical details required for the implementation of the 2024 Nihonmachi Alley Concept Plan. A main objective of the 2024 Concept Plan was to repave Nihonmachi Alley and to install permanent "gateway" sculptures. The 2024 Concept Plan only has drawings of this vision, so this phase of the project will utilize landscape architects, designers, and engineers to prepare a design package for the gateways, including engineering and architectural plans. The design team will work with Seattle Department of Transportation (@seattledot ) to ensure the fixtures can be installed alongside repaving plans. This Request for Qualifications only pertains to the creation of a design package for implementation and does not include implementation funding. Visit the link in bio for full RFQ details. Deadline to submit the RFQ is May 15, 2026. This project is funded by the Neighborhood Matching Fund from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (@seattle_neighborhoods ) Original design and rendering by MxM Landscape Architecture (@_mxmla )

Meet the second artist behind one of the new murals coming to 13th & Fir, Adden!      Adden Joule is a full-time muralist and street artist based in Denver, Colorado. Since 2016 he has worked professionally across public walls internationally, creating large scale murals throughout Europe, Indonesia, Central and South America, and across the United States. He is the founder of Project Street Gold, an internationally recognized brand producing limited edition cast metal works in collaboration with world renowned muralists and graffiti writers.    Here’s a statement from the artist:  “I am deeply drawn to the 13th and Fir project because of its roots in graffiti and aerosol culture, its commitment to affordable housing, and its dedication to reflecting the authentic voices of a richly layered community. The legacy of 206 Zulu’s Off the Wall event at this very site speaks directly to the tradition I have built my practice within, and the opportunity to continue that legacy on the exterior of a building designed to keep low income families rooted in Seattle feels both meaningful and timely.  What excites me most is the intersection of community, culture, and place this project represents. The Central District, Yesler Terrace, and the Chinatown International District each carry distinct and profound histories, and the opportunity to create work that honors that diversity while remaining visually bold and forward thinking is exactly the kind of challenge I seek. My practice is built on listening deeply to communities, translating their values into large scale imagery that feels specific, celebratory, and enduring. This project offers the opportunity to do exactly that, creating work that serves the residents of 13th and Fir and the surrounding neighborhood for generations to come.”  AJ’s mural will be installed directly across from King County Archives and the location of 206 Zulu’s Off the Wall graffiti art competition. We are so excited to share the finished mural with you this summer!

Meet the first artist behind one of the new murals coming to 13th & Fir, Derek Wu!     Derek Wu is a Seattle-based muralist whose roots trace back to street art. From these beginnings, he has developed a distinctive style that resonates with both the broader public and street culture communities. His work has taken him across the globe, from Amsterdam to Taipei and throughout all corners of the United States. Through surreal, narrative provoking imagery, Wu’s murals aim to reflect and engage the identities of the local communities that experience them.  Here’s a statement directly from the artist:  “As a former resident of the Central District, I’m honored to contribute, once again, to the CD’s cultural fabric. The first mural I ever painted still stands on Jackson Street at the Pratt Fine Arts Center, marking the beginning of my journey. I carry deep gratitude and respect for the community that supported me and shaped my path as a full-time muralist.”    The mural design was informed by inspiration sessions with the 13th & Fir community completed last year. Since then, Derek has been hard at work refining the design to reflect the community’s values and identity. We can’t wait to show you the finished mural this summer!

Hello all! Here is a re-introduction of Hing Hay Coworks, a program of @scidpda ! We opened our doors in 2015 to provide a community hub and collaborative space for creatives, entrepreneurs, remote workers, and local nonprofits. Co-working allows each member to work independently in a communal office environment. While we may not be working on the same things, it is always nice to have a friendly face around :) If you are interested in learning more, reach out to [email protected]
