Don't miss Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps this Saturday! Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps are on quite a roll. Her persuasive pipes slathered in honey and soaked in Texas-bred sass, keyboardist Teresa James and her band, the Rhythm Tramps, have long reigned as one of Los Angeles’ leading contemporary blues outfits, even though their uncommonly imaginative repertoire, much of it supplied by Terry Wilson, James’ husband, producer, and bassist, is by no means strictly limited to the 12-bar form. Tickets start at $45 available on our website or at the door.

The Meaning of Life: A Self Portrait is a new body of work by Southern California–based artist Jo Ann Block, on view at Studio Channel Islands Art Center from April 4 through May 30, 2026. Through sculpture, video, and painting, Block explores how meaning is shaped over time through personal choices, and self-reflection. The work examines identity, queer experience, sobriety and community using metaphor and materials to map a life that frequently doubles as a broader story of society. The exhibition unfolds as a series of interconnected works that loosely follows the trajectory of the artist’s life, inviting viewers into spaces that are at once intimate and expansive. Together, these works ask how purpose is formed, how identity evolves, and what it means to live intentionally.

We hope you enjoyed the third annual Ventura County Poetry Festival as Poetry in the Gallery makes its return to its standard format on Saturday, April 25 at 3:00 pm! Get tickets: studiochannelislands.org/poetry This month will be featuring Phil Taggart and Dane Lyn. As always, there will be an open mic. Poets who would like to perform can sign up on the day and will have a maximum of five minutes (if you have shorter poems, please feel free to do more than one). Tickets are free for all students, members of the gallery and performers. So, if you plan to read on the open mic, please reserve a free ticket, since you will count as a performer. General admission is a suggested $10 donation. If you would like to attend but cannot afford the donation, please contact sean[at]studiochannelislands.org for options of financial support. ~ Phil Taggart has four collections of poetry: Walking the Dog in a Time of Rage, Rick Sings, Opium Wars and an art book with artist Ann Harithas, Cowboy Collages. He has been a poetry editor for over twenty years for Art Life limited edition, and with Marsha de la O, the Askew Poetry Journal and Spillway. He has taught poetry workshops at Cal Lutheran, University of Pittsburg, local high schools, CAPS Media and elementary schools. He teaches Broadcast Digital Media at El Camino High School at Ventura College. Phil has run and supported poetry readings in Ventura County and Santa Barbara since 1991. He presently hosts a weekly poetry reading at the Vita Art Center in Ventura. Dane Lyn (they/them) is a neurosparkly poet, educator, and glitter enthusiast. They hold an MFA from Lindenwood University and are twice nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Dane keeps a ridiculous succulent collection, has five scavenger hunt runner-up ribbons, and is the Ink & Marrow's managing editor. danelyn.net • @punkhippypoet

Step into history and spend an evening that lingers long after the lights come up. Last Call at Maud’s: An Immersive Screening Experience transforms Jo Ann Block’s exhibition into the final night inside San Francisco’s oldest and most beloved lesbian bar. As the documentary unfolds, the gallery becomes Maud’s itself—alive with atmosphere, memory, and community—dissolving the distance between then and now. You will not simply watch the story. You will stand inside it. Surrounded by textures of the space, the echoes of conversation, and the quiet gravity of what once was, you are invited into a turning point in LGBTQ+ history. This is a tribute to the women who built sanctuary, forged connection, and shaped a cultural legacy that still resonates. Part film. Part installation. Part living history. Attendance is free; RSVP required. Saturday, April 25 at 7:00 pm & Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 pm Doors open 1 hour prior to event start time for mingling with drinks and small bites.
