HCR's strategic investments in public art is transforming Schenectady’s streetscapes and strengthening community identity. These murals, reflect the city’s rich heritage through carefully curated imagery including indigenous representation, natural landscapes, and regional symbolism.
Community leaders and local artists collaborated to create these installations, which serve as cultural landmarks in revitalized neighborhoods. We thank the Glenville Planning and Zoning Commission for approving the Glenhaven project this week. Schenectady County won a $1 million state grant to demolish the long-vacant and blighted Glenhaven School to be replaced by 29 high-quality single-family homes in Glenville.
Metroplex commissioned artist @hanwilliamsart to create a mural at the Schenectady Amtrak Station lot. The piece, called “Rooted in Motion,” pays homage to Schenectady’s natural and industrial history, and will be completed just in time to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Erie Canal. We thank Hannah, Amtrak, and @electriccitybarn for their partnership on this project.
It’s official, the Masonic Building at 302 State Street has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Final approval was granted in Washington last week. This designation qualifies the building for tax credits that will assist in the renovation process.
We thank Empire State Development for approving a $1.2 million grant to help the Schenectady YWCA (@ywca_neny ) build out a new day care center at the former St. Clare’s hospital campus. The St. Clare’s redevelopment is a $50 million investment in Schenectady.
