Happy Mother's Day to the Mother of Schellraiser, Louise "Lulu" Herndon, pictured here rockin' a QOTSA T-shirt with none other than
@shannonshaw at Schellraiser 2022!
My mom was hugely instrumental in instilling within me a lifelong love of music – just not the kind of classical music, Gilbert & Sullivan operas and '60s folk she adored.
Lulu signed me up for classical piano lessons as a child. But when I continuously rebelled against the stern and snooty piano teacher, she embraced my fleeting tween interest in bass guitar lessons, and my newfound love of the Ramones, Meat Puppets and The Replacements in the musical doldrums of 1987-1988.
In an era when many of her neurotic, Tipper-like peers were seriously freaking out about Prince, Madonna, metal and punk, she chaperoned me to see formative shows by Iggy Pop and the Ramones.
In spite of her personal tastes, she seemed to take an instant liking to the Ramones, and used to claim that "Cretin Hop" was her favorite song. (She would not have made a good poker player, because I know she would much rather have been listening to Joan Baez.)
As the years rolled on, we enjoyed seeing so many other artists together, from the mighty Koko Taylor, to Michelle Shocked, to Ozomatli, to Old 97's. Wonderful memories.
It goes without saying that there would not be a Schellraiser or a Humboldt Hideaway without Lulu.
After the financial bloodbath that was Schellraiser 2022 – and following regulatory cost overruns that kept soaring into the seven figures – my mom stepped forward in a big way, and helped us stage the next two years of our event.
Health issues kept her away from Schellraiser 2023, but she made a brief reappearance at our 2024 event, and was especially overjoyed to see little kids dancing to the music.
Regretfully, we will miss seeing her smiling face at Humboldt Hideaway this year. My mom is now in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease, and is completely bed-ridden at this point.
I'd like to believe that she'll be with us in spirit, though, and certainly, her influence will be felt all around us.
