“Art dealer Jonathan Schilder Brown (@leadgram ) has, like a cat or Proteus, led several lives. He’s had a career in neuroscience, architecture, and the theatre in New York. Now, he sells everything from contemporary painting to rare books to the occasional classic Porsche out of his by appointment Los Angeles gallery. He named his business Leadapron (as in an actual lead apron, though this writer pronounced it with the long O, like Raytheon, and hopes others have made the same mistake), after the protective shield that covers reproductive organs during an X-ray. He likes the connotations that come from each word – pencil lead, or leader, paired with a garment of the proletariat.” — @jocelynsilver Letters from LA, as seen in Scenery number four. “The most unassuming artworks and objects can appear transformed by their extraordinary settings and the company they keep with each other. High and low, old and new; there are no rules when it comes to art in the home. Truly great art has an all-inviting nonchalance that, at times, makes you forget what inspiring company you are in.” – @robincawdronstewart As seen in Scenery number four, available now from scenery-ltd.com Photography @chrislensz Sittings editors @wilfredrlewis @simon_b_morch Production @gw.plus

Designer Kate Stamps was an extremely early reader, in the vein of John Stuart Mill or Roald Dahl’s Matilda. She tore through Noel Streatfeild’s Ballet Shoes at the age of four and Jane Eyre by eight; before hitting double digits, she’d already devoured Jane Austen’s dissections of Regency England. And so a dedicated Anglophile was born: a passion nurtured further during adolescent trips to Europe, sourcing for her mother’s antiques business. “I think I was able to drive when I was 15 over there, because it was easier to get a driver’s license back in ancient times when everything wasn’t international and digital,” she says. “So I was driving to National Trust houses when I was 15. I have to admit – I’m a terrible, terrible nerd.”— @stampsandstamps As seen in Scenery number four. Photography @claracullen Words @jocelynsilver

The Stamps’ home in Pasadena, a 1904 carriage house that they’ve lived in for over 30 years, is a deeply considered love letter to English country houses, all honeyed light spilling over treasured antiques and squishy sofas. Finding it was a happy accident; their daughter, Emma, initially spotted a for sale sign from the back seat of the car, forcing her mother to pull over in front of what seemed like a vacant lot. “And we were so rude,” late (@stampsandstamps )says. “We drove down this very, very long driveway and just knocked on their door. And three days later, we owned the house.” - @jocelynsilver As seen in Scenery number four. Photography @claracullen Words @jocelynsilver

“In building a collection, many look to the advice of an interior designer or art advisor. But those with an attuned eye rely on their own instincts, honed after decades of trawling through monographs and exhibition pamphlets. Indeed, it is always a reassuring sight to see books precariously balanced (as opposed to artfully arranged) and auction catalogues spewing forth acid yellow tabs marking potential purchases. These are the houses that I am drawn to: the homes of true collectors.” – @robincawdronstewart As seen in Scenery number four, available now from scenery-ltd.com Photography @chrislensz Sittings editors @wilfredrlewis @simon_b_morch Production @gw.plus

“Living with art is an incredibly personal thing – sometimes shaped by an individual, sometimes by a family over several generations. Often, though, it is the result of two people spending a lifetime together, each bringing different loves to the table, or the walls, or the mantlepiece. A marrying together of tastes and interests to create a symbiotic harmony that is captured so effortlessly in the interiors of this eighteenth-century house.” – @robincawdronstewart As seen in Scenery number four, available now from scenery-ltd.com Photography @chrislensz Sittings editors @wilfredrlewis @simon_b_morch Production @gw.plus

“In 2023, furniture designer Brett Robinson (@robinson_brett_ ) was searching for a warehouse. He found a white mid-century box near the West Adams neighbourhood that had, over the decades, served as a bank (until someone allegedly tried to burn it down for the insurance money), a Rolex repair shop, and a weed-growing operation. ‘Now, I live here too because I thought, oh, if I’m going to be single in my thirties, I want to live in a weird fetish warehouse,’ says the designer and founder of the furniture studio B G Robinson. ‘I was like, we just need to build Hansel’s warehouse from Zoolander.’” – @jocelynsilver Letters From L.A.: A trio of Los Angeles studios and homes owned by three Californian design innovators, as seen in Scenery number four, available now from scenery-ltd.com Photography @rvstapleton Words @jocelynsilver Production @gw.plus

“The precious world of Le Grand Chalet would surely have disappeared if it had not been for Setsuko’s extraordinary energy and passion for preserving both the house and her husband’s legacy. She travels constantly, and earlier this year, she showed her ceramic sculptures at the Gagosian in New York. But her heart is at this house, where she entertains a constant stream of visitors, who cannot fail to be captivated by her charm, playful sense of humour, and stories of life with Balthus. In her own words: ‘We must keep the spirit of the house alive.’” – David Rocksavage Inside the Swiss home of artist Setsuko @setsukoklossowskaderola , as seen in Scenery number four, available now from scenery-ltd.com Archive photography David Rocksavage @houghton_hall Photography @brett_lloyd Sittings editors @simon_b_morch @frau.juliawagner Photography assistant @enricobrunetti Production @totalworld Special thanks to Harumi Klossowska de Rola, Benoît Peverelli, Sen Peverelli Klossowska, Mei Peverelli Klossowska, Thadée Klossowski de Rola, Chan Photographic, Touch

“In addition to her painting, Setsuko has developed a thriving new career as a ceramicist, creating teapots and perfume burners of exquisite refinement in her Paris studio under the auspices of the Astier de Villatte workshop: owls emerging from tree trunks and white cats with smoke issuing from their open mouths. ‘For the Japanese, it is like learning flower arranging or the tea ceremony – everyone can make pottery,’ Setsuko says. “My grandmother made tea bowls.’” – David Rocksavage Inside the Swiss home of artist Setsuko @setsukoklossowskaderola , as seen in Scenery number four, available now from scenery-ltd.com Photography @brett_lloyd Words by David Rocksavage Sittings editors @simon_b_morch @frau.juliawagner Photography assistant @enricobrunetti Production @totalworld Special thanks to Harumi Klossowska de Rola, Benoît Peverelli, Sen Peverelli Klossowska, Mei Peverelli Klossowska, Thadée Klossowski de Rola, Chan Photographic, Touch

At the top of a hill in rural Hampshire, perched above poplar trees and a 16th-century church, sits a Victorian barn. “I remember going to visit it for the first time,” says Edward Rollitt. “You reach the church, turn left up the track, go for about a mile, and then there it is… a very special place.” Boy in a Barn: A journey to the studio and home of artist @edward_rollitt in rural Hampshire Photography by @jessicamadavo Words by @rosalindjana

“While Philip Treacy’s studio (@philiptreacy ) is an elegant display of his haute creations, his home is a perfect hodgepodge of the priceless and the precious. On the day of our interview, Treacy insists we should remain in the store. When I ask why he’s reluctant to show me his home, he admits it’s because the cleaner hasn’t come. So when we do eventually head over, he compensates for what he sees as unforgivable messiness by lighting an array of candles and burning copious amounts of incense. It’s a beautiful kind of chaos, however – full of stories, of moments, of memorabilia.” – @laraletticejw As seen in Scenery number four, available now from scenery-ltd.com Photography @maxcornwall Words @laraletticejw Sittings editor @simon_b_morch Photography assistant @ricardomuca Production @gw.plus Hand printing #DarkArt at @318_art_lab Retouching #AdamReinbach Special thanks to Stefan Bartlett, Hanna Levy

“In Philip Treacy’s hands @philiptreacy , feathers become a swarm of butterflies; rings of raffia defy gravity in a tilted halo effect. In his latest collection, silks and satins in rich hues – vivid chartreuse, Yves Klein blue, fuchsia, rose red – swirl above the wearer’s head. In some, flowers peek out from under the brim, tipping the hat to the side. And Treacy’s workshop is stocked full of the fabrics and tools to bring these ideas to life. Up a small set of stairs lined with gilt-framed (and often signed) images of fans, friends, and celebrities wearing his pieces, sits his Elizabeth Street store. Here, the hats silently await their owners.” – @laraletticejw As seen in Scenery number four, available now from scenery-ltd.com Photography @maxcornwall Words @laraletticejw Sittings editor @simon_b_morch Photography assistant @ricardomuca Production @gw.plus Hand printing #DarkArt at @318_art_lab Retouching #AdamReinbach Special thanks to Stefan Bartlett, Hanna Levy
