Since the House of Dior’s inception, ateliers have worked behind the scenes to manifest each creative director’s vision. Starting with a streamlined sketch, ateliers spend hours preparing mock-up designs before the fabrication process begins. Collaborating under the direction of the head seamstress and their assistant, ateliers are split into two categories: flou (dressmaking) and tailleur (tailoring). Learn more about this process in “Dior: Crafting Fashion,” now on view at SCAD FASH in Atlanta.

Through clean lines and refined silhouettes, designer Marc Bohan modernized couture for career-driven women during the 1980s. Leading the House of Dior as creative director for nearly three decades, Bohan considered impeccable craftsmanship, tailoring, and minute details just as much as the final look. This 1986 design from the Dior Haute Couture Autumn/Winter collection was inspired by the abstract expressionist works of Jackson Pollock and merges both masculine and feminine elements for a more contemporary shape. Visit #SCADFASH in Atlanta to learn more about this look in the exhibition “Dior: Crafting Fashion,” on view through Aug. 23. Photos by Sungmin Kim. Courtesy of Dior.

Presented as part of the Dior Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2011 collection by John Galliano, this design echoes the work of artist, fashion designer — and confidant of Christian Dior — René Gruau. Galliano captures Gruau’s penchant for textural evocation by draping black tulle on red faille in a degradé ensemble. Experience this design up close in “Dior: Crafting Fashion” at SCAD FASH in Atlanta.

Featured among designs by his predecessors in the exhibition “Dior: Crafting Fashion,” Anderson’s bold take on the black dress draws inspiration from a ceramic vessel by artist Magdalene Odundo. Anderson’s Dior Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2026 collection pays tribute to the timeless elegance of Dior while progressively shifting the industry toward the unexpected. Known for donning strikingly bold caftans and capes during the later years of his career, André Leon Talley seamlessly blended fashion and comfort. André connected deeply with Rucci’s design philosophy. Both style phenoms favored garments with rigor and impact, dazzling in the details, like this cape André wore for the Chanel “Paris-Dallas” 2013–14 Métiers d’Art runway show. This gold Ralph Rucci caftan is featured among many other André-coded looks in “Le Style est Éternel.” Explore this look at #SCADFASH @scadlacoste through Oct. 31.
