Manzana banana gonna get planted.
Here we have Brazilian aka Apple aka Manzana banana that are going in the ground at Vista Del Mar Farms in Carpinteria. So grateful to @santabarbarablueberries for carrying the vision of growing bananas locally and supporting my Nursery.
These varieties were made popular by Doug Richardson who was one of the pioneers of growing bananas commercially in Santa Barbara County in the 80s and 90s. He had a 5 acre plantation in La Conchita California with over 70 varieties. most of these plants come from his original stock.
Many of the old varieties are unfortunately lost to time, but I am dedicated to gathering as many varieties as possible, to carry that torch forward.

Bananas are the worlds’ most popular fruit for a reason. They are delicious, packed with carbs and potassium, and actually quite a hardy plant that is beautiful in the landscape offering tropical vibes.
Did you know you can grow bananas in your own backyard? As long as your spot is relatively frost free, you too can enjoy fresh bananas right from your garden.
Pictured here is the Dwarf Brazilian aka Apple banana grown in Santa Barbara. A selection from Doug Richardson’s famous La Conchita banana farm, which was the only commercial banana plantation in the US back in the day.
Bananas have literally sustained cultures for millennia. They are one of the “canoe crops” along with taro and coconut, that Polynesian explorers would carry in the ballast of their wakas as they crossed unknown oceans in search of new paradises.
So create your own paradise in your backyard, I have multiple varieties in stock now in multiple sizes. Get yer ‘nana on. 🤙🏼

Putting the crop back in cover crop. Back in March we planted a cover crop @farmhandfoundation innovation farm in Meiners Oaks with a mix of root crops including purple top turnip. Safe to say it was a success, all rain fed. Why not get a food crop while improving soil? #regenerativeagricture #covercrop #stackingfunctions #permaculture #sborganics
