You might think you need a leather jacket, a tour bus, and a sold-out crowd to make an impact. You might think you need a huge platform to be someone’s hero. But to a child on our waitlist, you are a rock star simply because you are the one person who does not cancel. You just have to be there.

Who helped you grow? 🌼💛
We are connecting with the community today at the Chamber Expo & Job Fair and hearing about the people who made a difference in their lives. At CASA, we believe every child deserves someone in their corner helping them grow. 🌱

Today, a 10-year-old is getting ready for his first Little League practice. His CASA advocate worked to secure the necessary gear and ensure he has a consistent cheerleader in the stands this season. Sometimes advocacy looks like giving a child the chance to just be a kid.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the kinship caregivers in our community. These are the relatives and close family friends who open their hearts and homes to provide a sense of belonging during a time of transition. Kinship care is essential for maintaining cultural identity and emotional continuity for children in foster care. We are honored to advocate for these families as they provide a stable foundation for our local youth.

The need for advocacy is concentrated right in our own neighborhoods. Current data shows that 100 of the 124 children on our waitlist live in North County: specifically 64 in Santa Maria and 36 in Lompoc.
When 80% of the waitlist is local to North County, we need local advocates to step up. You don't have to be a superhero to be a CASA. You just have to be a neighbor who cares.

You don't need to be a Rocket Scientist to navigate the foster care system. You might think you'll need to calculate every move and have a master plan for the future, but kids don't care about your trajectory. They care that you showed up for the school meeting and remembered their favorite snack. It is not rocket science. It is just being there.

We had a wonderful time at the Yardi Nonprofit Fair! 🌱
Our new activity, “Who Helped You Grow?”, sparked meaningful conversations throughout the event. Attendees shared stories about the people who encouraged, supported, and believed in them. It was a beautiful reminder that one caring adult can make all the difference.

Today, an 8-year-old got his very first library card. His CASA volunteer spent the afternoon at the local branch helping him find the perfect adventure story to read together. Advocacy is not always about the courtroom. Sometimes it is about providing the tools and encouragement a child needs to discover a love for learning.

National Foster Care Month is an intentional time to acknowledge everyone who steps in when a child needs a safe place to land. From foster and kinship care families to social workers and CASA volunteers, it takes a dedicated community to navigate the complexities of the child welfare system. We are proud to work alongside these partners to ensure every child in Santa Barbara County has the opportunity to thrive.

We are starting our Monday stats with a focus on our youngest neighbors. Of the 124 children waiting for an advocate, 46 are infants and toddlers between the ages of 0 and 3.
For a child this young, the instability of foster care can impact their earliest developmental milestones. A CASA volunteer provides the consistent monitoring and advocacy needed to ensure these little ones are safe and receiving the care they deserve.

National Foster Care Month begins today, and the data shows exactly why our mission is year-round. While we celebrate that 23 children were removed from our waitlist last month (either assigned an advocate or achieved permanency), 28 new children were added to the list in that same timeframe.
Currently, we have 124 children in Santa Barbara County waiting for a CASA volunteer. This month, we are moving from awareness to advocacy.
