World Bank data and research by the former Catholic Bishop of Mannar, Right Reverend Dr. Rayappu Joseph, revealed that at least 169,796 were killed during the Tamil genocide in 2009.
Each tile represents a Tamil life lost 15 years ago — from newborn babies to elders who were older than the Sri Lankan state itself. Yet, we may never truly know how many of our people were taken. 15 years later, we are still uncovering mass graves, hearing new testimonies, discovering photos, and searching for those who were forcibly disappeared by the Sri Lankan state.
The Sri Lankan state committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide against the Eelam Tamil people — with the complicity and support of international actors. To this day, no one has been held accountable.
Instead, the unitary Sinhala-Buddhist majoritarian state continues to deny its crimes and oppress the Tamil homeland and its people — as it has done for 76 years, since gaining independence.
The Sri Lankan state committed some of the worst crimes known to humanity, with the explicit aim of destroying the Eelam Tamil people and their liberation struggle. But it failed.
15 years after the massacres of Mullivaikkal, and 76 years after Sri Lanka’s independence, the Eelam Tamil nation continues to resist state violence. Across the globe, Eelam Tamils persist in our struggle for justice, accountability, and our legitimate right to self-determination as a nation — until our people can finally live in peace and freedom.

Great Heroes resting places - the cemeteries that housed the bodies of the fallen LTTE fighters in Tamil Eelam. The Sri Lankan state destroyed all of these cemeteries after the end of the war. Despite the Sri Lankan state‘s suppression of Tamil memorialisation efforts, Tamils rebuilt some of the destroyed cemeteries to new memorials, resisting the erasure of their memories. Every year, Thousands of Tamils in the homeland gather on Maaveerar Naal (Great Heroes Day) November 27 at these places to commemorate the sacrifices of the Tamil liberation struggle, reaffirming their commitment to liberate the Eelam Tamil nation from Sri Lankan subjugation.
