Earth Day passed, but now climate reports call for earday everydaUkraine was joined yesterday by the Biden administrations support for old growth forests - pledging to plant 1.2 billion trees and compiling an inventory of old growth forests across the country. Old buildings, being storehouses of old lumber from the country’s virgin forests, aren't included; but have a role to play, with their spectacularly beautiful and extinct grain, figure and historical patina - inspiring renewal of these forests for the future. Celebrate the everyday of Earth Day and learn about these reclaimed woods in our recent book ‘Reclaimed Wood: A Field Guide’. Read about of the early days of milling in America, learn to identify the woods, and be inspired by lush architectural photography. From the back cover: Reclaimed wood is a gift from ancient forests and a versatile material. Our ancestors built their homes and barns, warehouses and factories with white pine and oak from the Northeast and Midwest, longleaf pine and cypress from the South, and Douglas fir and redwood from the Northwest. When we salvage these woods for new projects, we are strengthening our own roots. Reclaimed Wood: A Field Guide is the first complete visual survey of this valuable resource, with chapters on history, sources and types of wood. Reclamation and practical information, and its use in modern architecture and design. The South Street Seaport project was caught in some of the same weather we’ve seen in the Northeast the past couple of weeks. But the wood - African Ironwood - grew as if it was made for it - though in the tropical jungles of Africa. Its range spans through the Congo, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Ghana, Sudan, and Uganda. It’s lumber most often flows up to Europe, where it’s used for maritime decking or other applications requiring high durability; even the Paris Metro. And occasionally it crossed the Atlantic, where it was laid at the South Street Seaport in the early 1970’s. But it’s unlikely to be specified today, with harvesting of tropical hardwoods often severely damaging to local and global ecosystems. Because of its complex cell structure, the wood is highly unstable when milled under 1” thickness. However, it’s ideal for reuse as decking as seen here in this beautiful Fire Island application. #reclaimedtropicalhardwood #landscapedesign #exteriorwoods #nyc #southstreetseaport

Wood floats, unless it’s heavier than water, like a few super dense tropical hardwoods; or its a shipwreck - or its a log traveling down a river in the late 1800’s that gets snagged on a rock or a hanging tree, or other obstruction, until its waterlogged, and sinks. At that point, it’s not lost as potential lumber, but still in transition; in long term cold storage, lacking oxygen under water. A small number of these logs are hauled from the depths each year to be re-milled, emerging with unique color hues and organic river-like streaks, having absorbed and retained mineral deposits from the waters over time. The logs are cut into flooring and other millwork, as seen here; installed within a Tribeca New York loft space. #sinkerpine #longleaf #pine #newyorkcity #tribeca #reclaimedwood #interiordecor #riverrecovered #armsterreclaimed

A little salvaged wood goes a long way - especially with this installation - at a Bklyn .com office space, where the resurfaced antique woods are set against the concrete floor and alongside high back chairs, forming a more intimate island in the open, often light flooded space.

“The House Our Families Built” by @swoonhq - (aka Caledonia Curry) a roving, mobile sculpture that asks people to consider the legacy of ancestral histories. The 14’ diorama-style outdoor sculpture makes its way across Nyc through Feb 28th, finishing at Prospect Park (Flatbush + Empire) on Feb. 27-28th. In asking us to consider the “...legacies we carry forward and the legacies we make a conscious choice to leave behind”, we were happy for the work being made at the Sawkill warehouse. The artist and crew included reclaimed woods on hand in the installation.  #swoon #reclamation #PBS #Thehouseourfamiliesbuilt

In memory of David Salvador, who passed away from complications of Covid 19. David was a highly skilled woodworker and lover of the craft, who did much of the fine carpentry at the Clifton Pl. passive house project, and assisted customers with more complex table and custom woodwork. Patient, kind and committed to his craft, and always ready to joke around, David will be missed. Our condolences to his brother Sal, his beloved family and friends.

Stairs cases can be endlessly fascinating, The beautiful lines of this one are a centerpiece of a Brooklyn Passive House restoration. The project also utilized wide plank white oak (source: Barns), cargo oak (pictured, source: cargo crating) and new black walnut. Before and after. Always great to see a space transformed. Here, by antique grade E. Hemlock - and bright paint -6-8 inch width‘s at this Rockaway Beach House. Historically Hemlock was overlooked for flooring, being course, splintery and fragile - but some extra trim waste and sanding...the boards emerge at the mill as a solid flooring option - with those same qualities adding character to a surface moderately harder than White Pine. The shade tolerant hemlock occupies the understory of the towering Northern Pines, contrbuting to its uncommonly dense growth rings. #reclaimed flooring #RockawayBeach #Hemlock #InteriorDecour #InteriorWoodwork #gregorybissonette

Good Morning Bronx NY The mid-century Doug fir isn’t the most sought after lumber, but it tells its own story - though its forest origins better understood than what happened at the site over the last 50-80 years. Originating in the Pacific NW, it’s typical of the woods that were part of the cities commercial development - often used in the construction of the many one and two story warehouses and factories during the era. It’s rough sawn on one face with a relatively light nail pattern and broad growth rings that signal a more managed forest. How about that “PLANET” trash container as a symbol? #douglas for #reclaimedlumber #interiordecor #bronx #bronxnyc #constructionlumber
