The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, the world’s longest-running and largest organization dedicated to gorilla conservation, served as scientific advisors on the highly anticipated @netflix documentary “A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough.”
More than six years in the making, the film draws on nearly six decades of research by the Fossey Fund and was produced by @silverback_films in association with Appian Way Productions and directed by Academy Award–winner James Reed, best known for “My Octopus Teacher.”
Narrated by David Attenborough, “A Gorilla Story” is an intimate documentary following the remarkable history of the Pablo family of mountain gorillas living on the forested slopes of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The group traces its roots to research first begun by pioneering primatologist Dian Fossey, whose groundbreaking work transformed the world’s understanding of gorillas and helped spark global conservation efforts. Fossey’s research famously inspired her book “Gorillas in the Mist,” which was later adapted into an Oscar-nominated film starring Sigourney Weaver as Dian Fossey.

When Women Are Trusted, Communities Transform. 🚀
For years, Seraphine supported her family through small-scale potato trading, earning just enough to cover basic needs. Fear of and lack of access to borrowing cash and limited capital kept her income low.
In 2024, Seraphine joined our Village Vitality Project (VVP), which focuses on livelihood development and economic empowerment. Through the VVP, Seraphine was able to take a loan and grow her sustainable agriculture business. Today, her income has nearly doubled. She provides food, school fees and health insurance for her children and reinvests confidently in her future. ✨
Now a trusted community leader, Seraphine leads village sessions, supports informed decision-making and serves as a role model for other women.
When women are given the chance to lead, they don’t just change their own lives – they uplift entire communities and support conservation through sustainability. 💡
“Small opportunities can create lasting change. When women are trusted and supported, they can lead, grow and transform their families and communities.”
— Seraphine Tuyishimire, Community-Based Facilitator

Oh no - young male Ishimwe tried to step out of his rank! 🫣
In this video, Ishimwe, on the left, is clearly showing interest in young female Macibiri, but dominant male Urwibutso is not on the same page. Urwibutso steps in, separates the two with a warning pig grunt, and gives the young male a very serious look.
Ishimwe and Macibiri are reaching the stage in life when their close friendship may start to shift into something more serious.

We have an incredible update, straight from our Village Vitality Project (VVP)! 💧 🚰
As part of the VVP, communities continue to advance both livelihood and conservation-focused initiatives. Seventeen villages in the Gataraga Sector and five villages in the Jenda Sector selected rainwater harvesting as a priority conservation project! 🌧️
Following disbursement at the beginning of April, these villages have now moved into the implementation phase, with households purchasing and installing water tanks. The selected households were identified by the communities themselves, ensuring local ownership.
This initiative responds to the need for accessible water, as many households previously relied on sources within Volcanoes National Park, where the gorillas live. By bringing water closer to homes, this vital, sustainable resource is now available to these villages! 💛
