Today is Endangered Species Day! 🐸 For 21 years, the @endangeredspeciescoalition has organized this day of action to protect the species most at risk of disappearing forever. Six-lined Tree Frog (Polypedates taeniatus) is a small, slender bush frog with six- longitudinal black dorsal stripes. During monsoon we can spot them sitting in small bushes and can hear the male calling. The iconic Red-eyed Tree Frog is one of the most recognizable rainforest species in Costa Rica. Known for their vivid red eyes, neon green bodies, and bright orange feet, these nocturnal frogs spend their nights hunting insects in the tropical canopy before resting beneath leaves during the day. 🐸 SAVE THE FROGS DAY 2026 - TAITA HILLS, KENYA 📸🌳 Ten days ago, something extraordinary happened in Kenya's Taita Hills. 150 people came together to protect the Critically Endangered Taita Hills Warty Frog - a species surviving in only 4.3 km² of fragmented forest. Students from three schools, traditional elders, community forest leaders, and conservation practitioners united for seven hours of education, forest exploration, and hands-on habitat restoration. From educational sessions in Swahili and Taita language to guided walks through actual frog breeding sites, this day transformed how our community sees forest conservation. The Impact: 500 indigenous trees planted at critical breeding sites, 30 citizen scientists trained, 50 students engaged, 2 community monitoring groups established. Every Ocotea usambarensis, Podocarpus latifolius, and Syzygium guineense seedling placed in the ground will grow into the deep-canopy cover this species needs for decades to come. Beyond the numbers - we witnessed former fuel wood collectors commit to becoming forest guardians, women's groups embrace tree nurseries as livelihoods, and elders' traditional knowledge valued alongside modern science. The hands you see in these photos are literally building the future habitat for a species found nowhere else on Earth.
