Today is National Endangered Species Day! Chimpanzees have not always been protected under U.S. law. In 1990, wild chimpanzees were listed as endangered, but captive chimpanzees were excluded, allowing their continued use in research, entertainment, and the pet trade. In 2015, that split listing finally ended, and all chimpanzees received endangered status and greater protection #endangeredspeciesday #chimpanzee

Bobby enjoying Tickle Stick time! For safety, there is no physical contact between care staff and our residents, but we do offer short pieces of hose called “tickle sticks” to play and interact with the chimps.
*Bobby has access to a 3-acre island and has the freedom to choose how to spend his days

“Gail was small but mighty. You had to earn a relationship with her, but once you did, she enjoyed being groomed with a tickle stick or playing a very gentle game of tug of war. Ultimately, Gail was an island chimp. She spent as much time outside as possible, generally only coming inside for meals and to nest with her best friend Vanna at bed time. Though she was tiny, the legacy she leaves behind is great.” – Curator Jamie Dowling
