Today, the President signed H.J. Res. 140 into Law. This harmful legislation will revoke a 20-year mining ban in the Boundary Waters watershed. It will also prevent future administrations from using the same safeguards on the Boundary Waters. Not to mention, it sets a dangerous precedent for rolling back protections on other public land using the Congressional Review Act. This is grim news for Canoe Country and America’s public lands. Learn more about HJ Res. 140 and what you can do next to protect the Boundary Waters with link in bio. *Tune into Minnesota Public Radio at 5:20 pm CST to hear from our Executive Director, Ingrid Lyons.

Update from Executive Director Ingrid Lyons. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the U.S. Senate passed H.J. Res. 140, a devastating bill that will undo protections for the Boundary Waters. The vote passed by 50-49. Thank you to everyone who took action and contacted their senators. We’re grateful to have such a strong community of people who care deeply about protecting the Boundary Waters. Looking for more information on this vote? In our recent blog, we discuss the recent passage of H.J. Resolution 140, what it means for the Boundary Waters, what protections still remain in place, and what comes next in the fight to defend this extraordinary Wilderness. Link in bio.

It breaks my heart to share that the Senate voted 50-49 to drop the ban on mining that protects the thousands of lakes known as the Boundary Waters watershed from pollutive mining. Thank you to everyone using their voice for this quiet place, who has stood and continues to stand with the Boundary Waters ❤️‍🔥 Here’s how I’m thinking; figured I’d share. Feel free to share your emotions in the comments, and be kind to each other. Follow @savethebwca to keep up with the Boundary Waters, because it’s still possible to stop the mine at the state level. #savetheboundarywaters #minnesota

After today's vote, you may be wondering what comes next. Know that this fight is far from over, and we're not done yet. The state of Minnesota still has the authority to prevent a sulfide-ore copper mine in the Boundary Waters watershed. All mining proposals require approval from state agencies through an environmental review process. Additionally, the Boundary Waters Permanent Protection bill (H.F 309 and S.F 875) is currently active in the MN State Legislature. If you live in Minnesota, now is the time to raise your voice right here at home - contact your State elected officials and tell them to support protecting the Boundary Waters, permanently. Thank you for showing up and raising your voice. Our fight continues.

The Conservation Alliance and the businesses we represent are extremely disappointed in the Senate’s vote to pass House Joint Resolution 140. Invoking an unprecedented use of the Congressional Review Act, this will overturn the 20-year mining ban in the Boundary Waters region. The Boundary Waters are a quintessential example of how public lands protections and healthy outdoor economies are fundamentally linked. The outdoor recreation economy in northeastern Minnesota supports over 17,000 jobs and contributes more than $1 billion in annual sales. Sulfide-ore copper mining in the region will decimate local economies and put thousands of jobs at risk. Sadly, American businesses, local communities, and Tribes will suffer from this decision. The Conservation Alliance will continue to work alongside our members, partners, and allies in Congress to fight to protect the lands and waters we all rely on. We applaud the leadership of Senators Tina Smith (@senatortinasmith ) and Martin Heinrich (@senatormartinheinrich ) on this issue, as well as Senators Amy Klobuchar (@amyklobuchar ), Tom Tillis (@senthomtillis ), and Susan Collins (@sensusancollins ) for championing the protection of this landsape.

🚨 BREAKING: Senate passed H.J. Res. 140. 👎 This devastating bill will undo protections for the Boundary Waters. Today is a dark day for the Boundary Waters—and a warning call for public lands nationwide. By advancing H.J. Res. 140, the Senate has set a dangerous precedent that could open the door to rolling back protections for protected landscapes nationwide. But it's not over yet. We will continue to fight to protect the Wilderness. We will continue our work in Washington, D.C., AND in Saint Paul, MN. Minnesota can—and must—be the backstop against these unprecedented attacks on the Wilderness. We will provide updates on what today means soon and how you can keep using your voice to protect the Wilderness.

⚠️ URGENT: U.S. Senate likely voting today on overturning the 20-year Boundary Waters mining ban! Congress must reject efforts to allow mining near these pristine waters, such as rolling back existing protections using the Congressional Review Act. Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is ranked #3 in our #MostEndangeredRivers of 2026 report and are threatened by a massive sulfide-ore copper mine proposal. 🔊 No mining near our Boundary Waters! #TakeAction today at the link in our bio! 📞 Call your Senators and tell them to vote no on HJ Resolution 140.
