5 years home for Pepper š¤
Pepperās adopter shared this wonderful update as they celebrate 5 years together. Over the years, Pepper has grown from a very fearful and hesitant dog into a silly, gentle girl who loves couch snuggles, beach runs, rolling in grass, camping trips, enrichment puzzles, and special treats.
Sheās worked through so many fears ā from learning to feel comfortable on walks and around people, to tackling elevators, balconies, busy roads, parks, and basketball courts. Sheās even learning how to play tug with her dog pal, and every tiny tug is a huge win.
Pepper still has anxieties, but her confidence has grown so much over the years, and sheās become a completely different dog. Weāre so proud of her progress and so grateful for the patience and love her adopter has given her. š¾

24 dogs in care headed into the long weekend
would have been kind of funny if the weekend was still May 24th. Weāre excited to share that all but 7 of those dogs have adoptions pending! How friggin awesome is that. And 4 of the 7 are new arrivals who are still settling in.
In about 2.5 weeks we have another 13 dogs planned to arrive, with possibly some other intakes sprinkled in.
Weāre always looking for support, keep an eye on our page for updates!
P.S. the cutie in the picture is Lua who just recently got adopted! šāØ
P.S.S. Donāt forget this weekend is prone to firework displays. We highly suggest keeping dogs inside after dark.

Paige update āØ
Well first, we have to say we were surprised to find out how many of our followers love beagles! We received a number of messages inquiring about fostering or adopting Paige. Itās been very sweet to see everyone loving this sweet senior girl. Just to note she has a foster and is not adoptable just yet!
If youāre not familiar with Paige, she came into foster care about a week ago. She ended up in a shelter after her owner passed away š
Weāre here to update that Paige is doing AMAZING! We were told Paige loves food, people, and short walks with stops for sniffing. Sheās been a great house guest as sheās crate trained, house trained, a good walker, super low maintenance, and good company cause sheāll chill next to you while youāre working/reading. We can tell sheās been loved and cared for previously.
As a 13 year old girl, her mobility is good on stairs, but you just have to be close by her as she can lose her balance. Her harness has been great cause it has a handle to keep one finger loosely on.
Paige is awaiting her intake vet appointment which will give us some further health insight to be able to plan next steps for adoption. Paige is on thyroid medication currently and takes it easily with food.
If youāre interested in supporting with costs related to Paigeās care, please message us to get the link. We provide tax receipts for all donations!
We will keep you up to date with next steps! āØš

If you arenāt familiar with Paigeās story, she recently found herself in a local shelter after her owner passed away. With no next of kin to take her, the shelter looked for a rescue to take her on. She joined our care on May 7th!

⨠new adoptable - meet Luchi āØ
Male | 2 years old | 40 pounds | Medium energy | Lives with a dog | Hasnāt met kids | Previously met cats | From Mexico | Fostered in Waterloo | Gentle & sweet
Everyone, meet LUCHI! With those soulful eyes of his, you can sense how sensitive and gentle a fellow he is. With a little patience and guidance, heās going to make for an incredible companion to have by your side. Since being in his fosterās care, heās been warming up to his people and showing more affection and tail wags!
Busy figuring out all the things, LUCHI is looking for a confident handler. Might that be you?! His adopter(s) should know that he walks well on leash, though he can be easily frightened. Sudden new sounds and movements can startle him, and his response is typically to exit the scenario. Having defined boundaries as well as a set routine in place both set him up for success and will be necessary going forward. Youāll love to know that heās both place- and house-trained, and not to brag or anything, but it only takes him a few minutes to settle at night in his crate!
LUCHI has been enjoying his walks, as evident in his tail wags! He also finds joy in sniffing all the smells in calm outdoor environments. When heās inside, heās a big fan of lounging near his people, though his chill energy may increase as he becomes even more comfortable. Only just starting to show an interest in playing with toys, we can share that he likes chewing sticks!
Give him some time to warm up, and then he might even accept a little affection from you! Heās food-motivated, and in time will be happy to accept a treat or two. Youāll be impressed at how gently he accepts them. As gentle as he is, heāll likely do best with dog-savvy kids in an effort to limit startling him. LUCHI does just fine coexisting with other dogs and has also shown the same temperament with cats in a prior home. He currently lives with a resident dog, and while he has yet to meet many new scruffs, the interactions he has had have been neutral in a good way!

⨠new intake - welcome Kailani āØ
Can you believe this girl has been waiting in a shelter since August 2025. Itās wild to us how many highly adoptable dogs are waiting š
Kailani is about 1.5 years old, 44lbs and her personality is sweet and gentle, but sheās still opening up! From shelter care to living in the suburbs is a big shift. Shes taking it with strides and while prefers her crate or hanging in her bed, is starting to play with toys, accept treats and getting braver each day. The last photo is from her in the shelter!
Welcome Kailani
P.S. sheās not currently adoptable and is just settling in ⨠if youād like to donate towards her care send us a message š
Toby wanted to introduce you to the first save our scruff (human) baby āØ
Congratulations to volunteers @kristenavery & @mrgiladcohen for their new addition Goldie š
Kristen & Gilad met volunteering with save our scruff! First comes love, then comes moving in with each others dogs and then Goldie!
But letās not forget about Toby who is āembracing his new role as a curious, empathetic and loving big brother. He comes running when he hears her cry and will sometimes join her with a whine. He very much wants to be part of this new little lifeā.
Congrats to their growing family and happy first Motherās Day to Kristen!
P.S. These two are save our scruff photographers, can you tell?!
JUST pulled from the shelter, meet senior girly Paige š
Unfortsuntely Paigeās owner passed away and because she lived alone her pets ended up at the shelter. Despite efforts, no next of kin was able to take her in.
We can tell my meeting Paige and reading her medical files that she has been well loved and cared for. We hope to do our best to find her a new place to call home š
Paige is about 13 years old (update as post originally said 8). She was originally rescued from a beagle lab, being used for animal testing. She has a few stable health conditions we will review with our vet while also letting her settle into foster care.
Thank you to the shelter staff for trusting her in our cqre and providing her such great support during this difficult transition.
Welcome Paige š
If youād like to donate to her care, send us a message for more insights on how to help!
