Since its inception in 2017, Clean Seas became the largest global campaign to raise awareness on plastic pollution and marine litter. 69 countries joined the campaign, representing 76% of the world’s coastline, committed to implementing stronger legislation and policy changes at national, regional, and local levels and further promoting citizen science and behaviour change with over 115,000 people pledging to reduce their plastic footprint. Through the campaign’s consistent messaging and outreach and strategic partner engagement, Clean Seas set the foundation to establish an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to support Member States in negotiating a legally binding global plastics treaty.

Marine debris is basically human-discarded debris that floats on the surface of the ocean or is suspended in the ocean. Eighty percent of marine debris is plastic. Microplastics and nanoplastics are formed as a result of the destruction or photodegradation of plastic waste in surface waters, rivers or oceans. Recently, scientists discovered nanoplastics in heavy snowfall, or rather, about 3,000 tons, which annually cover Switzerland.

It is the only representative of the genus of baleen nurse sharks of the family of nurse sharks of the order Wobbegongiformes. It lives in the Atlantic Ocean and in the eastern Pacific Ocean at depths up to 130 m. It reproduces by oviposition. The maximum registered length is 430 cm.
The diet consists of benthic invertebrates. It is of little interest to commercial fisheries.

Plastic pollution of the oceans is a global problem. According to 2022 data, global consumption of plastics is 300 million tons per year, of which 8 million end up in the ocean.
Some causes of pollution:
dumping garbage into the seas and oceans;
flushing household garbage from the shore during high tides;
lack of wastewater filtration: waste is not extracted and gradually floats into the oceans;
Marine tourism: bottles and other garbage are thrown from the decks of ships.
The impact of plastic on marine life is detrimental: it threatens the health and life of ocean inhabitants. For example, seabirds and turtles often swallow plastic bottle caps and die due to blockages of the digestive and respiratory tracts.
To solve the problem, they propose:
the development of biodegradable materials that do not turn into microplastics.;
development of technologies for local plastic collection in safe areas, without endangering marine life;
preventing plastic from entering the ocean through effective recycling programs and reducing its use;
creation of marine reserves where plastic debris is removed manually, minimizing damage to ecosystems;
Support initiatives for separate waste collection and the creation of more sustainable waste management systems on land.
