Its not everyday that your product ends up on the front cover of Architecture Australia.
It wouldn't have been possible without @breathearchitecture , @jeremy_mcleod and circular economy lead @irmavallenachon
All credit goes to them, and if you haven't seen it yet, its still on at the @ngvmelbourne until the end of April.

Jason caught up with Paul from @saveboardanz to see how they are recycling plastic waste into wall linings for sheds and more. Watch along to see a Kiwi company manufacturing our waste into new products for us to build with. So good to support NZ made and jobs for Kiwiโs ๐ณ๐ฟ๐๐ผ#shedlife #waikatosheds #saveboardnz #recycle #recycling #manufacturing #nzmade #buynzmade

Soft plastics recycling is back across Australia, and we've updated some of the signage to show you how it goes from collection into a finished product.
In another one of my home made videos, we are trying to give people transparency of what happens to it when it reaches saveBOARD and how we make our Green Woolworths board that you see in store.
Collection is only half the story. For recycling to actually work, someone has to buy and use the recycled material.
At saveBOARD, we turn post-consumer soft plastics and food & beverage cartons into building materials used in @woolworths_au Supermarkets, commercial fit-outs and homes.
That coffee bag or bread bag you drop off doesnโt magically disappear. It gets:
โก๏ธ collected
โก๏ธ sorted
โก๏ธ processed
โก๏ธ manufactured
โก๏ธ installed back into the built environment

We are regularly impressed by the creativity of our clients, who use saveBOARD to build spaces that reflect their personality, their interests, and their specific needs.
Social media DIYer Crankiepantsnz used saveBOARD Exposed White Noise internal lining to give his workshop a complete custom fit-out.
Beyond the modern aesthetic, the space is functional. It provides a durable, solid surface that allows tools and shelving to be fixed directly to the wall, creating a high-performance workspace that is fit for purpose, good for the planet and cost effective alternative to plywood, OSB or Strand board.
If you don't follow Chris aka Crankiepantsnz on Instagram or Tiktok he's worth watching and often shows you what not to do, so you don't repeat it....

This clip is from a recent project captures exactly what we set out to achieve: a product that makes the builder's job easier, the building perform better, and the planet a little bit healthier.
We talk about ๐ฃ๐๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ + ๐ฃ๐๐๐ก๐๐ง + ๐ฃ๐ฅ๐๐๐ and we believe betterBRACE delivers on all three without compromise.
โ Engineered for Extra High wind zones
โ Excellent bracing capacity up to 154BU/m (NZ) or 6.0kN/m (AU)
โ Closes in the building faster, so fit-outs can begin before the rain screen is even on
โ Market-leading price for a rigid air barrier / external bracing
โ Reduces noise making for a quieter home
โ Actively cuts the carbon footprint of every build it goes into
In an industry where you're usually forced to trade off cost, time or quality (the old saying you can have only 2) we don't want architects, specifiers, builders to compromise.
Locally made, from locally collected recyclable material and locally distributed in ANZ.

๐ง๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ก๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐....
Last week we completed another batch of testing, this time Shear Strength testing of our betterBRACE external bracing system, so structural engineers can complete Specific Engineering Design (SED) with confidence.
To be a viable replacement for traditional building materials, we've had to prove that saveBOARD products are the same or better than what's already on the market. That means testing across the full spectrum:
๐ Acoustics
๐ช Bracing & shear strength
๐ฅ Impact resistance
๐ง๏ธ Durability & weather exposure
๐ฟ VOCs & Formaldehyde emissions
๐ฅ Fire
๐ Structural performance
๐ฆ Mould resistance
Just to name a few of what we've completed over the last 4 years. The list is extensive and costly, but essential.
Without independent, certified testing, our products simply cannot be used in Australian and New Zealand buildings. Every test is essential to ensure sustainable building materials are the obvious choice.

In this video, we built a quick DIY bike ramp using saveBOARD 2Faced. To make it interesting, I stepped in as the "foundational structure" while my son took the bike over the top.
While this is definitely NOT a recommended application for our products, itโs a perfect demonstration of the board's impact resistance and structural integrity. No humans (or boards) were harmed in the making of this video!
What is saveBOARD 2Faced?
Our 2Faced board is a sustainable, high-performance building material made from upcycled composite packaging. Itโs designed to be:
- Impact Resistant: Clearly, it can handle a bike!
- Flexible yet Strong: It contours without cracking under pressure.
- Made from 100% post consumer soft plastics and 100% recyclable.
๐๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ซ: This video was filmed for demonstration and entertainment purposes only. Please use saveBOARD products according to the technical specifications and installation guides found on our website.

@woolworths_au has now rolled out soft plastics collection points to more than 700 stores across five states, and we at saveBOARD are proud to be part of making it happen!
The key piece for us is that Woolworths isn't just collecting soft plastics, they're closing the loop by bringing them back into their own stores and supporting a circular economy. In the 9News footage from last night you see our processing plant where soft plastic waste and food & beverage cartons are made into building materials, which have already installed across 170 stores nationwide.
Woolworths is leading by example, not just talking about sustainability, but building it into the fabric of each store they refurbish. Next time you are in a Woolies, look out for the Green saveBOARD panels in the self-check out areas, low height walls, White panels around the milk fridges and feature walls in store.
Thanks to Woolworths to help make this a reality and it couldn't be done without other processors like iQRenew, Plascrete, and Soft Plastic Stewardship Australia in reshaping how Australia handles soft plastic waste.
The future of recycling needs to be circular otherwise it doesn't work. ๐๏ธ

Clean packaging, dropped into the bin at your local supermarket. From there it gets collated, sent to us at saveBOARD, shredded, mixed, then heated and pressed into a composite panel. That panel could end up back in a supermarket as a low height wall, or helping build a house.
We're one of the soft plastics recycling partners across Australia and New Zealand turning this material into something real and usable, not landfill.
The more people specify and use circular products like saveBOARD, the more impact we can have and the more recyclable material we can pull through for processing.

For the past six months, New Zealand nurseries have been using our 2FACED panel as the growing foundation for thousands of plants destined for sale.
Before making the switch, the organisation were going through roughly 2,000 panels of imported plywood every year.
๐๐ก๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฆ?
Plywood and water don't get along that well when lying flat with pooled water. Those boards were delaminating within 1-2 years and heading straight to landfill.
Our 2FACED panel is made from 100% soft plastics, is naturally waterproof, and when it eventually reaches end of life, we can take it back and recycle it again. A genuinely circular outcome.
A huge thank you to our client for trusting us with a real-world challenge and being our guinea pig, and proving that the right material can make all the difference.
Next time you are at a nursery, keep an eye out for them as we slowly replace all the plywood in circulation.
