Gisteren vond de transplantatie plaats.
De stamcellen – gedoneerd door Mohamads broer en met liefde en precisie voorbereid door het bloedbankteam van AUBMC – werden rond het middaguur in Mohamads lichaam geïnfuseerd.
Alles was tot in de puntjes verzorgd. Alle medicijnen waren toegediend. Alle comfort was gegarandeerd. Het team stond paraat en aarzelde geen moment.
Nu begint de gevaarlijkste fase.
Mohamads immuunsysteem is vrijwel nihil. Zijn bloed- en trombocytenwaarden blijven dalen. Hij heeft bloedtransfusies nodig. Hij moet 24 uur per dag in de gaten gehouden worden. Hij wordt alleen beschermd door de muren van de intensive care, het onvermoeibare medische team en de stille, liefdevolle aanwezigheid van zijn moeder aan zijn zijde.
De transplantatie is geslaagd zoals gepland. Maar zijn lichaam moet nu de nieuwe cellen accepteren en ze laten uitgroeien tot een nieuw immuunsysteem. Dat proces duurt weken – en is zeer risicovol.
Dit is het meest cruciale moment van zijn hele traject.

Muhammed'in bağışıklığı neredeyse yok denecek kadar az. Kan ve trombosit sayıları düşmeye devam ediyor. Transfüzyona ihtiyacı var. 24 saat boyunca izlenmesi gerekiyor. Sadece yoğun bakımın duvarları, yorulmak bilmeyen sağlık ekibi ve yanında sessiz, sevgi dolu annesinin varlığıyla korunuyor.
Nakil planlandığı gibi gerçekleşti. Ancak vücudunun şimdi yeni hücreleri kabul etmesi ve yeni bir bağışıklık sistemi oluşturmasına izin vermesi gerekiyor. Bu süreç haftalar sürüyor ve risklerle dolu.
Bu, tüm yolculuğunun en kritik anı.

Yesterday, the transplant happened.
The stem cells — donated by Mohamad's brother, prepared with love and precision by the blood bank team at AUBMC — were infused into Mohamad's body by midday.
Every detail was in place. Every medication given. Every comfort ensured. The team stood watch and did not waver.
Now begins the most dangerous phase of all.
Mohamad's immunity is almost nonexistent. His blood and platelet counts continue to fall. He needs transfusions. He needs round-the-clock monitoring. He is shielded only by the walls of intensive care, the tireless medical team, and the quiet, loving presence of his mother by his side.
The transplant worked as planned. But his body must now accept the new cells and let them grow into a new immune system. That process takes weeks — and it is fraught with risk.

Yesterday was one of the longest days of our lives.
Mohamad's brother went in for his stem cell donation after five days of Zarzio injections.
The first attempt failed. His arteries could not withstand the procedure. They had to stop. Rest. Regroup.
A specialist was called. Ultrasound was used. Deeper arteries were accessed with stitches. And then — the machine started.
Two and a half hours later, the medical team told us: the full amount of stem cells needed for Mohamad's transplant had been collected.
We cried.
To the blood bank team at AUBMC — thank you. Your professionalism, your compassion, and your humanity carried our family through the hardest day. You did not just do your job. You gave Mohamad a chance to live.
The stem cells are ready. The transplant is next.

Behind every bone marrow transplant, there is a donor.
Mohamad's donor is his own brother.
For the past few days, his brother has been giving himself Zarzio injections — a medication that pushes his bone marrow to produce extra stem cells and release them into his blood, so doctors can collect them without any surgery.
His side effects? Mild bone pain, headache, and tiredness. Nothing serious. And it all disappears quickly after the last injection.

📉 This is what bone marrow transplant conditioning does to a 15-year-old boy.
Over 4 days of chemotherapy at AUBMC, Mohamad's immune system has been deliberately destroyed — so that his brother's donor cells can take over.
His ANC (the count that measures his ability to fight infection) has dropped from 1,802 to 420.
A count below 500 is called severe neutropenia. At this level, even a minor infection can become life-threatening within hours.
This is not a complication. This is the plan. But surviving it requires constant monitoring, antifungal medication, antivirals, isolation, and the full support of a specialized medical team.
