Emily Nash, 2023. We talked about listening beyond words and into the fourth dimension, her love of failing at things that feel new, her refusal to torture her audiences, and the quiet work of bringing forward parts of herself that were once silenced. She brought me to the empty silo, which was already breathing with the early echoes of her upcoming performance, Midnight Gospel.
In Seydisfjordur, East Iceland, the sun doesn’t reach the fjord for most of the winter. On the final days of darkness each year, the town hosts an arts festival @list_i_ljosi that celebrates the return of the light by illuminating the town with art.
“CHEEKS OUT (33 days without sun)” was a video created in collaboration with artists Isa Rakel, Marizó Siller, Dicte Røn and Sigrid Rodian, with help from Chloe N and Astrid Bell. It was shown at Lunga’s exhibition “Stay, Somehow”, in the List i Losi festival 2023. With the sun only reaching the very top of the fjord’s mountains at that time of year, we created a choreography of desperate sun seekers who had gone to extremes to try and bronze their skin in the sun.
Here are a couple of my fave photos took during the recording of the choreography.
BIG ups to the strong women that bravely bared their bodies in -15 temperatures and Iceland’s high winds for this!! And big ups to saunas and friendship 🔥
