What does a landscape remember after extraction?
In অঙ্গাার / AWNGAR, Sarker Protick photographs coal mines, disused railway lines, and industrial terrains across the historical region of Bengal.
These landscapes are shaped by the infrastructures of empire — systems that once fueled mobility and modernity, but that continue to leave behind dust, displacement, and environmental damage.
Rather than reproducing familiar colonial ways of looking at land, Protick’s images dwell on combustion, exhaustion, and ruin, revealing how extraction remains embedded in the ground and in the present.
On view at the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale 2026.
JAX District, Diriyah | Open until May 2, 2026

This came out last September, and I have completely forgotten to post about it!
I’m incredibly grateful to Nandini Chakravarty and Sria Chatterjee for their conversations during the book’s creation, and to Katharina Täschner for putting it all together when our entire country was upside down.
If you are interested to get a copy you can directly get it from here: /produkt/after-nature/
The comprehensive essay ‘Photography in the Time of Extraction’ by Sria Chatterjee can be read here: /yfw3m323
For students in Dhaka, you can find a copy at Pathshala Library.

Back in 2021, when Pathshala moved into the new campus, the 10th floor became my favourite place to make portraits of friends, colleagues, and students.
Initially, the 8th floor was supposed to be Pathshala Studio, as it was designed for- with a double height. Eventually, we had to settle for less.
For me the 10th floor corner became a makeshift natural light studio. The first portrait I made was of Shahidul’s. This particular corner has the basic window light, a simple background, and a good height. Throughout the day as the sun moves, the light offers different hue and intensity. It’s often a quiet space.
Presently, the place has been turned into a storeroom. It looks a bit like a dumping zone for the last 6 months. I hope once Khandaker Tanvir Murad @tanvirmurad returns from an inspiring tour in UK, will look into this matter.
Here are 3 portraits of Satu, Deba, and Shehab Bhai.
