โIn Gallery 2, Naim presents a video-based performance entitled Mother Practices Her Tongue. The camera frames Naim in a photographic portrait as she performs a series of vocal exercises, attempting to articulate and pronounce individual Arabic letters. The sounds repeat, stretch, and break apart in irregular rhythms. The title of the work reflects the strained diasporic relationship to oneโs mother tongue, which was further exposed by the experience of becoming a mother. At the same time, the work points to a broader question about language itself. For Naim, words derive their meaning not from sound alone but from the systems that structure and organize them. By isolating letters and repeating them out of sequence, she disrupts this structure, reducing language to its most elemental components and exposing its symbolic framework.

The works point to the multitude of systems that construct and impose meaning, while revealing how it also operates as a shifting interface through which perception, identity and experience are continually negotiated.โ Excerpt from an essay by @odessawarren_ for my current exhibition at @thethirdlinedxb

My exhibition at @thethirdlinedxb , which was meant to open tomorrow, has been postponed. Iโm feeling a mix of emotions โ selfishly sad not to be sharing a show Iโve worked so hard on, while also feeling the weight of whatโs happening in the Middle East right now. My thoughts are with everyone who is truly suffering during this time.
The paintings explore how inherited ideologies and images shape our often distorted understanding of the world. It feels strangely resonant in this moment, and I hope the show will open soon.
Thank you to everyone at TTL for all the energy thatโs gone into the show and for navigating such difficult circumstances x

@thethirdlinedxb celebrates 20 years! Excited to be part of the show โThe Only Way Out is Throughโ with all the artists from the gallery, curated by @shumonbasar . If youโre in Dubai on Sept 18, itโs a must! Congrats TTL, itโs been a journey that Iโm grateful to have gone on with you for most of that time.
Iโll be showing Pallor, 140x100cm, C-type digital print, 2016 & Pink Curves, 120x57.5x90cm, C-type digital print, wood, plexiglass, 2020. Both works consider the skin as an elusive threshold, marking connection rather than separation.
My practice is concerned with perception, often focusing on the perception of borders. Our innate understanding of connectedness is undermined by the social conditioning that reinforces division. Iโm currently exploring how borders are protected, how they are patrolled, how these lines are transgressed, and how they govern the flow of movement of people and plants. How are positions of power shared between border patroller and transgressor? How does the military uniform play a role in this power play (does our projection validate power)? How does inside and outside boundary operate in relation to protection and exclusion? What are borders actually protecting, and how does transgression of flora parallel the transgression of people along borders? Arguably, boundaries emerge from duality, rather than from the fluidity inherent in polarity. So, how can we penetrate these lines, physically and non-physically?
