May is Mental Health Awareness Month 🧚 For me, mental health awareness is an all day, every day thing. I have been a Board-Certified Music Therapist since 2006 & during the pandemic, became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. 🎶 I have had the pleasure of working in inpatient & outpatient mental health settings, hospitals & schools with trauma survivors, those challenged by & triumphing over addiction, with newborn babies, hospice patients at end of life, neurodiverse humans, people with physical and cognitive delays, (their families), folks without a home, & most recently in my own private practice 1:1 with adults. I have also been deeply devoted to mental health via my own journey as a human, artist, healer, weirdo, HSP, empath & survivor for all of my days through reading, learning, my own healing path & creating songs. 💃🏻 I am so grateful to bridge the words of music & mental health every day in what I offer to the world, my art & my life’s path. 🙏🏽 We are in a far better place today than where the field of mental health began & I’m happy to say that conversations are being updated to include much healthier lenses regarding our minds, bodies, emotions, brains & thoughts, & how to take care of them all. Here are some things I would love to share with you: 🧠 Our brains benefit from regular check-ups 💫we have neuroplasticity (we can learn new things at any point in our lives!) ❤️ it’s important to become more trauma-informed & understanding of people who are unlike us ☮️ mindfulness is being taught to children AND many of us were told to numb, avoid, and fear our feelings 🦄 stigma is being chipped away at but we have a long way to go… be kind! 🏠 a lot of unhoused people are dealing with severe mental health challenges & lack of support … don’t assume you know their stories ☀️ therapy is for everyone If you have any questions, need any resources or want to know more… drop me a line! I’m grateful to Schmaud @audmarko for capturing it! 💫 Life Raft was written during the pandemic when everything imploded. 💥 It’s an homage to the oddity of time & how sometimes survival feels like clinging to what tangibles are within grasp, breathing through the shadows, one second at a time…all the while, dropping pins to remember our bearings. Time’s essence was forever changed for me post-pandemic (anyone else?) and I had a lot of existential ponderances. (I still do).
