Continuing on in our second MMR artist profile, we’re diving in deeper on Madison’s self described “camp counselor band”, @sapsuckermusic ! The folk/rock group released their debut album, Pour Out Your Soul to an Empty Room, last month and was selected as our Album of the Month.
The magic of music lies in the emotion that it is able to capture, explain and reproduce. Especially in a live setting, that emotion is commuted into joy, community and catharsis. The magic of Sapsucker exists in the exact same way. Madison’s smiliest band, their live shows are best categorized by their pure love of performance, a language they were able to translate into their debut record.
The album itself can be filed broadly under indie rock, with sparks of folk, country and alternative seeping in through the cracks. Each track reads as a separate book rather than just a chapter, complete with stories and influences all their own. Each member of the band shines in their own right through intricate solos and creative fills. The record was recorded old school style, all playing in the same room, in order to capture the energy of their live performances, which it certainly accomplishes. Sapsucker is making music as it’s supposed to be - a group of people creating great songs and having fun doing it.
It’s been another lovely month of releases and this month’s selects pull from the great variety that the Madison Music Scene has been producing. From folk to electronic to alt, here’s some of the releases that stuck with me this October.
