One of my favorite experiences here in Japan has been visiting a potter I admire at his home studio. Naoki Yamamoto @toudokorokaze lives in Ikawadani and works from his home studio in the countryside. I enjoy the train ride and the long walk past farmland to find his home. The laid out tiny pots on the fence line let you know when you have arrived. This is my second visit, the first being in 2023 - I appreciate our small exchanges with my limited Japanese and also using a translating app. I really love his work and you can learn more about him too if you search his studio name @toudokorokaze on YouTube there is a nice video with English captions.

I’m in Japan visiting my friends Darren & Miwa and we wanted to remind you about an annual workshop we host at the studio called Cacao Dye Day. Darren is a chocolate maker here in Omihachiman (as well as a ceramic artist & chef) and Miwa is a natural dyer. She uses the waste byproduct of the cacao husks to dye a gorgeous cacao color story. This workshop includes a homemade Japanese lunch (in past years we have done udon tempura & Okonomiyaki…) it also includes two pieces of Japanese cotton fabric called tenugui that you will get to take home as your finished dyed pieces. Miwa will teach the basic Shibori dyeing techniques and this class is for all skill levels, beginners are welcome!It’s a really fun workshop so I hope you can join us August 9th. 🌈4/18 アルバム🌞 🍓いちごまつり&PORTLAND DAY🍓 神戸に、FARMERS MARKETに、やってくるのは３回目！というPORTLANDのジェイミーは、友人の農園の敷地内にスタジオを構えて、陶芸家や染色を体験できる素敵な場所を運営しています。@sandyriverstudio 今回はポートランドで繋がったアーティスト仲間たちと日本へツアー！神戸にもやってきました。 今回は一緒に味噌作りをしたり、羽釜でランチを作ったり、あちこちで交流をしながら、土曜日にはファーマーズマーケットに参加してくれました🍓 アーティストたちらしく、草木染めや版画のワークショップを開催してくれましたが、大好評！楽しそうな雰囲気に、たくさんのひとが興味津々で集まって話しかけてくれました。 草木染めでは、農家さんが持ってきてくれた花やいちごも使って、いい匂いが広がりました。 版画も和気藹々と参加者同士で助け合いながら、それぞれにユニークな作品が。 『食』と『アート』 どちらも、国境や言語を超えて、ひとをつなぎ、本質的な豊かさを私たちに与えてくれます。 これからもファーマーズマーケットは、アートのチカラ、アーティストのチカラにも助けられながら、神戸の暮らしの中に馴染んでいきたいと思います。 いちごまつりを、アートを、ファーマーズマーケットを、一緒に味わい、楽しんでくれたみなさんに感謝🌈🍓🧡 Thank you!! In a rural weaving community on the Hatatani River today we met a visionary designer at her waste free textile factory and toured her facilities including her farm. Every piece is unique, they don’t advertise. The dye is both natural and fiber reactive. They use wool from their animals. 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱Here are the principles of Tamaki Niime. 1. Live comfortably, live cheerfully 2. Do it now! Think while you do it 3. Growth comes through failure, so keep experimenting 4. Question the norm, create comfortable things 5. Make the things, experiences, and people in your life feel good 6. The earth, animals, and plants are all living things, let’s live together 7. At the same time, we received unexpectedly positive news at the halfway point of Jenny’s chemo treatment. A new sun is rising 🌞 We’re excited to share that our new innovation lab, New Suns, has launched a radical, free, collaborative arts graduate school — an experimental space where art, ecology, collective practice, and curiosity meet. 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞And now, our first cohort is headed to Japan 🇯🇵 Invited for an artist residency in Kobe, by AiRK (Artist in Residence Kobe) we’re creating, teaching, and exchanging ideas rooted in land, food, and community.
