BRAVE by Wilmarc Val
When a Haitian Vodou priestess, a Mambo, passes away, it is the duty of her children to celebrate the deity she served. It is time for the artist’s mother to return to the homeland to perform this ritual in honour of his late grandmother.
Wilmarc Val was born in Dessalines, a commune in Haiti. He arrived in France at the age of 4 and grew up in Seine Saint-Denis. Since childhood, he has had a passion for astronomy, then for cinema, a love with which he renewed at the end of his journalism studies.
The BRAVE movie has been nominated in the following festivals and awards: International Documentary Film Festival of the Amazon Caribbean – French Guinea, Festival dei Popoli – Italy, Camerimage – Poland, Cinébanlieue – France – Commune Image Award, Beijing International Short Film Festival – China, Encounters of Documentary Cinema in Haiti – Haiti, Premiers Plans d’Angers Festival – France – Cinébanlieue carte blanche, Ethnocineca International Documentary Film – Austria, Mediawave International Film and Music Gathering – Hungary, International Ethnographic Film Festival of Quebec – Canada – Best Documentary Short, Life Beyond Life – Italy, IsReal – Real Cinema Festival – Italy, International Documentary Film Festival of Saint-Louis – Saint-Louis – Young Critics Jury Prize, International Festival of Identitarian and Solidarity Films (FestiFIS) – Benin, New Directors / New Films – Portugal, Moscow International Documentary Film Festival DOKer – Russia, Camden International Festival CIFF – USA, International Festival of Ethnological Film – Serbia, Quibdo Africa Film Festival – Colombia.
