Truly nothing worseā¦ you have a running start and complete the face which is the most fun part of the portrait and then youāre chasing your tail painting the hand for a week. All part of the journey!
Hereās a watercolour portrait of serge gainsbourg. Picking this back up after abandoning for almost a year actually and Iām remembering how laborious working with watercolor actually is in comparison to oil paint.

It was a lot of fun and a real challenge to get her iconic tattoos correct at such a small scale. But totally worth it.

I just completed this like ~1hr study from a screencap of Tabitha dancing in the promo video which was my first time revisiting charcoal in like 2 yrs.
There certainly will not be enough time to labour over something with this level of finish but maybe itās a backup for my ego š

Sam Taylor is a Brighton-born portrait artist. Working in oil, watercolour, and charcoal, his practice is primarily focused on capturing the vital spirit of music icons past and present, and honouring their contributions to culture.
Sam has previously studied figure drawing in Paris at the Montmartre-based atelier Studio Escalier and within the sculpture courtyards of The Louvre.

Dude this has taken a lot longer than I had anticipated but alas that is the dance when it comes to painting. You kinda have to submit to what it demands of you.

So I had this thought, and to me it feels totally valid.
Must a portrait of somebody be limited to their face?
This is a work in progress of a painting of Amy winehouse (or rather her legs). And I think itās just a valid a portrait as a headshot - and maybe more so!
I think something totally different and just as justified is revealed through this. Through those ballet shoes that became so synonymous with her. With what that says about her way of navigating the world.
Lemme know what you thinkā¦ this has actually been a struggle getting the shape of the foot right but Iām thinking itās gonna turn out strong!

The structures in the background made for some interesting marks in charcoal.

lol but fr it can be so tough to convince yourself to proceed when you already love the way a painting looks in its loose, sketchy, early stage.
Certainly the case for me with this oil painting of lana del rey from the shades of cool music video. Totally planning to keep it loose though which will be fun and feels like a natural progression of where my work is headedddddd.
