After a weekend of hard-fought racing at the inaugural @hopetech @pmba_enduro National MTB Enduro EDR Championships at Ae Forest in Scotland, our Head of Mountain Bike Design @samshucksmith is officially Britain's first ever E-Enduro National Champion (under 40)! #UpTheShucksmith “I was really chuffed - probably the most chuffed I’ve been leaving any race,” said Sam on his win. “It feels like a big deal to get the British Cycling National Champion’s jersey and have a proper awards ceremony. It’s another level for British enduro.” Sam was crowned the men's champion alongside @tracy_moseley as the women's. Congratulations both! The race itself was a fitting challenge to decide the national titles: with very technical or very physical stages. Add in mixed conditions under tyre with muddy and slippery wooded tracks giving way to relatively dry open, trails, and it was an all-round test of rider, fitness, and bike. “I had a crash on Saturday where I bent back my wrist and little finger,” explained Sam. “It was extremely painful on the Sunday morning so that’d didn’t help. In the end I had a relatively clean race but I had some pretty decent competition so I was still very much nervous about seeing the result. I’m really pleased.” A huge thank you to everyone who's been involved in bringing to life Britain's first ever national enduro championship. @samshucksmith has a lot to answer for. Not least for how our mountain and electric mountain bikes all ride as our Head of Mountain Bike Design. An ex-World Cup downhill racer turned enduro and e-enduro racer - with multiple national titles to his name - he's fast, precise, and analytical. With a stint at Red Bull Technology as a composite design engineer, he's also no stranger to high performance composites and technologies, including carbon fibre, and he blends everything to incredible effect across all our bikes. Still racing, still winning, and still delivering class-leading, award-winning bikes, he mostly lets his riding - and his engineering - do the talking. What three words best describe you?  “Motivated, reserved, analytical.” What gets you motivated and amped for riding more than anything else?  “Having a bike that I love riding.” Who is your hero and why?  “My brother - he rips on everything and taught me so much.” What type of riding brings you the most joy? Why?  “Trail riding on fresh loamy tracks. I love the predictable lack of traction.” What is the lie you tell yourself most often? “You’re not good enough.” What innovation would you most like to see setting the biking world alight?  “Bikes that get you back to the top of the hill as quick as an uplift... oh wait.” What was the single most useful piece of riding advice you were ever told? “'Do your shoe laces up...' After a crash where I lost a shoe.” When things aren't quite going to plan, how do you bounce back and grow in confidence?  “Slowly, by progressively cementing positive experiences.” If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?  “Just stick with a bike you feel comfortable on.” If you could only ride one more trail, where in the world would you go? Why there?  “Les Gets Red Egg main line from ~2003 after some serious rain. Our Head of Mountain Bike Design @samshucksmith is returning to race between the tapes this weekend at Round 4 of the @britishnationalenduroseries in Minehead, Somerset, hosted by @southernenduro . He’ll be climbing back aboard his race- and award-winning ELyte 150 Works with its 400Wh internal battery and 250Wh 'PowerMore' range extender giving him both the power and the range for some big days of racing. Sam's running the bike pretty stock with just a few changes: he's using a Hope E4 front brake - that’s less powerful than the Hope V4 rear brake - for a bit more control; a 25mm stem; and Maxxis Assegai Double Down front tyre, paired with a Maxxis DHR II Double Down rear - but without any tyre inserts.
