Concept poster for a 1967 Aretha Franklin concert at the Philharmonic Hall in New York.
This is a homage to the late grate Milton Glaser, whose work is a constant inspiration to me, particularly with regards to typography, colour and illustration. The Barbican Arts Fair 2024. Alas! There is no such thing, but if there was, this would make a rather neat poster for such an event of splendour and creative wonder.
‘The Laundromat’, a digital acrylic painting, was inspired by the likes of Hungarian-French Op-Artist Victor, Vasarely and Swiss architect and artist, Max Bill, with their wonderful visual worlds of bold and harmonious colour combinations and striking shape compositions.
The name was given to this painting retrospectively. The lines, of various colours and warmth, meet at a focal point within the composition, which made me think about how neighbourhoods can have these communal pinch-points, where people are forced to come together, somewhat cosmically, even if to carry out mundane or banal tasks, such as shopping for groceries or doing laundry.
Yet there is a hidden beauty in this banality.
‘The Laundromat’ metaphorically depicts the light and energy of people’s rich and storied lives; their memories and shared (and unique) human experiences, refracting in the glass of washing machine windows, into colourful phantasms, dancing around the room, if just for a fleeting second and from the exact right angle.

Conceptual single cover art for Scott Walker. Digitally painted whilst listening to Scott 4. These aren’t actually the singles from the album but would have made nice ones.
Scott 4 was perhaps Walker’s finest body or work but sadly (somehow) didn’t chart, or become the critical success it later found recognition for, and was subsequently deleted, forcing Walker to retreat from the limelight for some years.
