Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. I think Lent can be helpful in a culture so easily distracted by temporary relief and counterfeit rest. Lent isn’t commanded in Scripture or required for holiness—it’s simply a tool, one that can help reorient our days and priorities. And I want my motivation to be really clear: not guilt, not shame—but in response to love and because of love for my wonderful Savior. This Lent, I’ve thought about a series called “Holy Hungers & Counterfeit Gods.” The idea is that we’ve been given real, God-given needs—holy hungers—but instead of finding satisfaction in Him, we so often try to fill them with things that cannot satisfy. I wrote this poetic prayer as a liturgy to begin the season, and Sam Rae composed this beautiful companion music. Ephesians 2:4–5 — “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us… made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” If you want to help shape the series— What do you find yourself reaching for when you’re tired, overwhelmed, or restless?
