“I’m sitting halfway down the staircase. It’s cold beneath my ass. Snowflakes howl past the thin windows of the lobby, seeming somehow paler when they catch the florescent light on their haphazard journeys past our building. I can’t stop shivering. All there is in the world right now is coldness, inside and out. Sunrise isn’t for a few hours. I wrap my arms tighter around myself and think of the warmth I left behind in bed, which must’ve departed the sheets soon after me.”
This is a short story I finished a few years ago and forgot about in a desk drawer. I thought I’d finally put it out there. You can read the full think on my Substack @mysterious__visitor
An empty Irish coastal town in the dead of night. The hotel is mostly empty, with months to go before it’s rooms are booked up by golfers and beach visitors. The staff are kind but bored. The streets are eerily empty, except for the odd local who eyes me suspiciously as they pass. No one seems to be under forty unless they’re uncoordinated teenagers serving flavourless food or the bartender scoffing at my failure to finish my fifth pint of Guinness. (He slips a straw into the half-empty glass with a smirk.) I imagine I could hear the echo of someone’s footsteps miles away if it weren’t for the wind. The views on the beach during the day change constantly, so it might be a different place entirely every time I look at it. Irish beaches are transitory forms — both timeless and also forever shifting when the eye turns away from them. They might consume the whole town someday while someone is distracted by another meal that’s enjoyed only the faintest hint of salt and pepper.
