š Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Samoaās National Environment Week "Local Actions for Global Impact" 2026 ā Day 1 āNATIONAL BIODIVERSITY DAYā
⨠We kicked off the week at the TATTE Building with our Environment Career Open Day, where the Meteorology Division, together with all MNRE divisions, welcomed students, professionals, and the public to explore our display booths.
š From tropical cyclones to tsunami preparedness, climate services and environmental monitoring, our team shared knowledge, answered questions and inspired the next generation of environmental leaders. It was a brilliant chance to see science in action and understand how local expertise connects to global resilience. Weāre calling it National Blue Day, a reminder to #BlueItUp for our ocean, sky and species.
šø Here are some highlights from the booths and the vibe of the day:

šSÄmoa at the TEMPPā2 Regional Workshop
The SÄmoa Meteorological Service, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, proudly participated in the ITIC Training Programme Regional Workshop on Tsunami Evacuation Maps, Plans and Procedures (TEMPPā2), held from 13ā17 April 2026 at the Tanoa International Hotel, Nadi, Fiji.
š§š½āš» Representing Samoa was Adriel Une, Scientific Officer of the GeoScience Section, alongside colleagues from DMO Samoa and other regional and international partners.
This workshop, organised by IOCāUNESCO, ITIC, and NOAA, focused on:
š Practical use of GIS mapping tools (QGIS) for tsunami evacuation maps
š Developing community response and evacuation plans
š Strengthening regional collaboration under the UNESCOāIOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP)
š Through shared knowledge and handsāon training, Samoa continues to build resilience and preparedness to protect lives, livelihoods, and communities from tsunami hazards.

šAs we approach World Earthquake Day, we reflect on the historical impacts of earthquakes and strengthen our understanding of this Hazard.
šWhat is an Earthquake?
An earthquake happens when built-up stress in the Earthās crust is suddenly released. Over time, slow moving tectonic plates create this stress. When it becomes too much for the rocks to hold, the energy is released as seismic waves, causing the ground to shake.
šŗļøTo better understand the scale of impact earthquakes can have, we have provided an overview of some major historical events and how they have shaped our understanding of this hazard. Each location point is paired with brief details about the earthquakeās magnitude, location, and whether it generated a tsunami, helping visualize both the scale and global distribution of the hazard.
šThe Images below highlights some major earthquakes such as:
š2004 Sumatra, Indonesia Earthquake
š2009 Samoa Earthquake
š2010 Haiti Earthquake
š1906 San Francisco Earthquake (USA)
š1906 Esmeraldas, Ecuador Earthquake
š2011 Japan Earthquake
š1965 Alaska Earthquake
š1952 Kamchatka, Russia Earthquake
š2025 Kamchatka, Russia Earthquake
š1960 Biobio, Chile Earthquake
š1950 Arunachal Pradesh, India Earthquake
š°These Historical events remind us that earthquakes are not just historical facts. We share these past events to remind our communities that earthquakes are real and ongoing risks. Understanding them is the first step toward being prepared and staying safe.

This Wednesday marks the first time the world will observe World Earthquake Day. A moment to raise awareness about one of Earthās most powerful and unpredictable natural hazards.
š Samoa sits within this active region, near the Tonga Trench, making us particularly vulnerable to both earthquakes and tsunami impacts.
This video shows a timeline of global earthquakes from 1901 to today. The colorful pop-ups are record of seismic activity over time. Notice how these events cluster along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where tectonic plates meet, making it the most seismically active zone on the planet.
Youāll also see how some earthquakes generate tsunamis, with waves spreading across entire ocean basins.
As this is our first dedicated earthquake post, we aim to highlight the importance of understanding seismic hazards, strengthening preparedness, and staying informed.
Earthquakes may strike without warning but awareness and readiness can save lives.
