Part of his British Queens series, this piece depicts Mary Queen of Scots - Mary was queen of Scotland from infancy, and crowned at nine months old following her father's death. Raised at the French court, she married Francis II in 1558 and became Queen of France — simultaneously holding two crowns. Widowed at eighteen, she returned to Scotland to rule a country she barely knew. Her reign was defined by political intrigue, religious conflict, and ill-fated marriages. Forced to abdicate in 1567, she fled to England seeking refuge from her cousin Elizabeth I — and was imprisoned for nineteen years before her execution in 1587.

Coming to London soon.
Catherine of Braganza, 30x21 cm, Oil on board, 2026
Catherine of Braganza (Portuguese: Catarina de Bragança; 25 November 1638 – 31 December 1705) was Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland during her marriage to King Charles II, which lasted from 21 May 1662 until his death on 6 February 1685. She was the daughter of John IV of Portugal, who became the first king from the House of Braganza in 1640, after overthrowing the 60-year rule of the Spanish Habsburgs over Portugal. Catherine served as the regent of Portugal during the absence of her brother Peter II in 1701, and again in 1704–1705, after her return to her homeland as a widow.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Freeth RA , he was an inspirational tutor, artist and very supportive presence in the print room at @royalacademyschools from when me and my brother Luke were there in 2003/07 thoughts with his family.
@royalacademyarts We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Peter Freeth RA. Peter died peacefully at home in London a few days after he celebrated his 88th birthday.
Elected as a Royal Academician in 1991, Peter was an inspirational printmaker who was renowned for his beautiful etchings as well as a much-admired teacher. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Bloody Mary. Power, conviction, and one of the most contested figures in British history.
