It's not easy for me to admit this, so I'm reaching out with humility and honesty to my community: I need help.
For those of you that know me, you know this tax season I was informed that I don't make as much money as I thought. As Pride season approaches, my worst fear has become realized - I can no longer afford to go to all the parties and everything that I really really want to go to.
As queer people, Pride is an opportunity for us to reconnect and remind ourselves of the strength and courage of the community. Everyone celebrates in their own beautiful way. For me personally that means paying $90 - $180 to dance without my shirt on in a warehouse with a bunch of guys who are potentially interested in having sex with me. But with inflation and the rising cost of living, I might only be able to afford one party - leaving me to beg for guest list or worse: stay home.
And lets not forget the rising cost of gay life in general. My pride experience wouldn't be fully realized without the drinks, ubers or unintended expenses like parties and stuff I don't even know about yet.
I've done the responsible thing and budgeted out what I'll need to survive MY pride MY way. Here's what your donation is going towards:
Uber Blacks: As a marginalized person I don't feel safe driving in a Honda Civic
Drinks: This is a great way to support gay owned venues
Dr*gs: I'll be transparent - I will be using your money to buy me and whoever I feel is deserving dr*gs. This is non-negotiable since this is how I experience queer joy. And don't worry! It won't be any of the scary kind.
Outfits: I can't be seen wearing anything that I've worn before or worn to another pride event this year. If you're uninformed on this fact, I suggest you educate yourself.
