A MOTHER IS BORN: a short film In the first three months of the sleep-deprived, surreal, and emotional haze of being postpartum, a writer tries to make sense of her new identity as a mother. Becoming a mother has been the most difficult and meaningful transition of my life. There’s this paradox you are faced with immediately that something can be wonderful and joyous, and also intense and isolating within the same ten minute span. When I was navigating my postpartum identity shift in 2017 and 2018 (and let’s face it, even today in 2026) I would have loved to see more complex, nuanced portrayals of the messiness of motherhood in media. So I did the only thing I know how to do when I’m going through something profound, or I find a story I feel I have to tell: I made a movie about it. This film feels like my diary is being read out loud, but it may be the most raw and truthful piece I’ve ever made. This film is an offering. It’s not my story anymore, it’s your story. It’s your partner’s story. It’s your friend’s story.
