@zohrankmamdani reacts to @mta chair Janno Lieber’s concerns that free buses may cost more and that it must be studied. (And yes, seconds before my live hit Wednesday I heard a voice to my right and looked and there was he was with his hand outstretched saying hi. I said I wish you could stay to talk free buses. At least we got to the next day!

The 2nd of three fare gate models the @mta is piloting in the subway system are operational now at Atlantic-Barclays and PABT. The MTA is not paying for the first 20 stations, the companies are and they will pick one multiple models to install in 150 stations by 2029. There’s 1.1 billion in the MTA’s capital plan for these (and for those complaining they’re not fixing the trains there’s also money to upgrade signals and buy new train cars). And it’s not just about preventing people from jumping, it’s also about accessibility and eliminating the need for the emergency exit gate where about half of fare evasion happens. #transit #subway #fare gates

Why is your morning commute from Long Island going to suck on Monday. Listen up. 3,500 LIRR workers from five unions say #mta was using gimmicks and in the 11th hour proposed new hires paying part of their health benefits while the mta says it offered 4.5% pay increase in the 4th year of this contract and the offer on paper was closer to 4.5 and relied less on lump sum cash payments. They say without concessions riders and taxpayers would be on the hook and an 8% fare increase instead of the 4% every two years would be needed. MTA’s chair and ceo pointed out that many of these workers already earn $136k plus tons of overtime because of work rules left over from when the railroad was private. Now the mta has a contingency-shuttle buses from LI to subway stops in Queens but can only accommodate 13,000 of the typical 300,000 daily weekday commuters. #transit #train #rail #nyc

LIRR riders could face massive travel disruptions as a potential union strike threatens to halt daily rail service. The LIRR unions want a 5% wage increase for the fourth year of their contract. The MTA, meanwhile, is offering a 3% increase — plus lump sum payments — to bring the actual total up to 4.5%, which the unions call a gimmick. Officials are working to find a resolution before the strike deadline impacts the morning commute.

The New York City Transit Lost and Found receives about 3,000 items per month, often reuniting them with their owners. @samiktv takes a look at what New Yorkers leave behind – including prosthetics, dentures and urns with human remains.

Was invited to ride with @nycmayor as he announced he’s turning Bergen and Dean Sts into bike boulevards to make it safer for cyclists by discouraging thru vehicular traffic and putting in traffic-calming features. #cycling #nyc #bike #brooklyn

Would you take an electric helicopter to get to the airport in seven minutes? On Monday, Joby Aviation demonstrated its eVTOL, which stands for Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing, which could one day take passengers between Manhattan and John F. Kennedy International Airport. The company says fares could eventually be comparable to a car service or ride share like Uber.
