Straight from the heart of the Yiddish Theatre boom in the US comes this tune made famous by the Andrews Sisters. It clearly has klezmer roots, but the orchestration in the original musical clearly appeals more to the jazz sensibility of the age (albeit through a musical theatre lens).
The famous Andrews Sister lyrics were written years later, after Jacob Jacobs and Sholom Secunda had sold the rights to the original song, after their musical closed after one season (where the song was moderately popular). The most known lyrics were written by Sammy Cahn and Saul Chaplin.
