Luc Jolivet's second photobook published with nos:books, "Far Too Close (Go Too Far)" consists of 12 detachable posters in quarto fold. Jolivet’s eyes zoom in to look closer at the ordinary random reality, which creates little mysteries yet to unveil. Like the unnoticed background music playing in an elevator, or the background noise in a busy metro station, Jolivet focuses on these otherwise mundane “background visuals” in life. His witty images capture and dance around layers of meaning hidden in the everyday oddities, only left for the readers to unfold at their own choice.

겨울의 마지막 날들을 보낸 노그리스 타운이라는 곳에서, 여행 중 뜻밖의 여정을 경험했다. 세 자녀를 둔 달튼 가족이 나를 따뜻하게 맞아주었다. 하지만 내 호기심을 자극한 것은 식사 전의 독특한 기도였다. 나무와 농작물, 그리고 모든 동물에 대한 감사를 표한 뒤, 사람들은 “세상은 거대한 뱀의 뱃속에 있다”라는 말로 기도를 마쳤다.
은퇴한 교사 패트릭이 이 마을의 역사를 나에게 들려주었다. 1990년대에 노그리스에 뱀 비늘 같은 모양을 한 운석이 떨어졌다고 한다. 그 운석을 만진 아이들은 병과 위험으로부터 보호받는다고 믿어졌다. 패트릭은 우주의 기원이 이와 비슷한 패턴을 따랐다고 굳게 믿었다. 먼지가 뱀의 형태로 뭉쳐진 뒤, 몸을 웅크려 행성을 형성하고, 그로부터 생명과 문명이 탄생했다는 것이다.
노그리스의 신부는 봄이 오기 전 의식을 거행하곤 했는데, 그 무렵 초자연적인 일들이 일어나 내 기억의 경계를 흐릿하게 만들었다. 창밖에서 흐릿한 얼굴들이 보이기도 하고, 극심한 육체적 고통을 겪기도 했으며, 머리부터 발끝까지 비늘로 뒤덮인 꿈을 꾸기도 했다.
이제 나는 노르그리스로 돌아갈 기회가 없다. 아니면 어쩌면 노르그리스는 존재하지 않는지도 모른다. 거대한 뱀의 뱃속에는 따뜻한 소화액이 흐르고 있다. 한동안 나는 의심할 여지 없는 벽에 둘러싸여, 그 안에 잠긴 세상을 바라본다.

It's an unexpected journey during my travels, in a place called Norgris Town, where I spent the final days of winter. The Daltons, who have three children, graciously took me in. However, it was the peculiar pre-dinner prayer that piqued my curiosity. After expressing gratitude for trees, crops, and all animals, people would conclude it with a phrase - "The world lies within the belly of a giant serpent."
Retired teacher Patrick shared with me the town's history. Back in the 1990s, a meteorite fell in Norgris, bearing scales like a snake. Children who touched it were believed to be protected from illness and danger. Patrick strongly believed that the origin of the universe followed a similar pattern: dust coalesced into the shape of a serpent, then curled up to form planets, giving birth to life and civilizations.
The priest in Norgris would conduct a ceremony before spring arrived, and during those days, supernatural occurrences blurred the lines of my memory. These included seeing indistinct faces outside my window, experiencing intense physical pain, and dreaming of being covered in scales from head to toe.
I no longer have the opportunity to return to Norgris, or perhaps Norgris does not exist. Within the belly of the giant serpent is a warm digestive fluid.

"I've always been fascinated by the word "touch" —whether it's its sound, its meaning of "physical contact," or the sense of "being moved." To me, it holds a special allure. That's why I once created a folder on my computer and named it "touch." For the Jia Exhibition Special Exhibition, I selected moments where hands interact with the world-touching rain, feeling small animals, or gently brushing against tiny insects. To me, these photographs represent my way of understanding and sensing the world around me. I also invite you to step into this realm constructed through touch—to touch alongside me."

I love the word "touch"-both its meaning and its sound. The photographs in this book span over a decade of my life.
Below are fragments of my thoughts and feelings while capturing these images:
Sometimes it wasn't easy. I wrestled with myself in those moments, often giving up-but occasionally, I lifted my heavy hand and pressed the shutter.
I want viewers to feel as though they're pushing against a wall when looking at these photos, sensing the resistance pushing back.
With photography, I wage war against time. My images are weapons in this battle.
Intimacy is rare for me-whether emotional or physical.
I'm not a gentle person, but I want to become gentle.
Water droplets slide down my arm. I feel them. When they fall-cool? Ticklish?-neither word captures that sensation. Can photographs bring me closer to that feeling better than words ever could?
Tangibility! These photos are about the raw sensation of being alive!
If you're happy, clap your hands. If you feel alive, take photographs.

건물 입구에서 그는 아홉 사람에게서 수프 레시피의 한 단계를 각각 수집했다. 각 단계는 직원용 엘리베이터 정차 순서에 따라 1층부터 9층까지의 엘리베이터 홀에 할당되었다. 책 제목은 그 수프를 맛보지 못한 마망의 한마디에서 따왔다. 조각난 지시사항, 독립된 단위로 기능하는 층들, 그리고 수직 운동으로 내용물을 서서히 섞어내는 장치. 드러나는 것은 존재하지 않는 수프의 맛과 건물을 지나간 이들이 남긴 최소한의 흔적뿐이다.

At the entrance of a building, he collected one step of a soup recipe from nine people. Each step was assigned to the elevator halls on the 1st through 9th floors, following the stops of the staff elevator. The title of the book is taken from a remark by Maman who never tasted the soup. Fragmented instructions, floors functioning as discrete units, and a device whose vertical motion slowly mixes its contents. What appears is only the taste of a soup that does not exist and the minimal traces left by those who passed through the building.

“Things that cannot be seen within a single photograph begin to emerge when gathered into a photobook—like a melody reconstructed by connecting individual sounds. What I believe in, what I have experienced, what I love… Gradually, what once felt blurred begins to come into focus. Unlike the time before photography, when I was simply drifting through life, I started to feel that what I had done was becoming something irreplaceable through experience. Not as nostalgia, but as a way of asking again, ‘What was that time?’ My path only exists through the repeated act of shaping it again as a photobook. I came to understand that physically.”
