What a fun night @royal_scottish_academy opening, a giddy whirl of hellos and hugs and art, but a quieter vibe to return this morning and see the show properly. Thank you to the hanging team for doing such a great job hanging, I’m chuffed to see ‘Confluence’ hung vertically for the first time!
Trying to paint the wind, or how the bright, moving air feels like a lively participant, not just an emptiness. I’ve been putting in a weekend shift to keep this big painting moving, slowly, incrementally, towards a resolution that’s still some way off. Sometimes I think I can see it coming, then it slips away again. I’m very thankful for the support of the @hugoburgefoundation to help make this slow, layered exploratory painting possible.

When Andrew had to pull out of running in the London Marathon due to injury we thought we’d use the travel tickets and spend the weekend doing something we wouldn’t otherwise be likely to do. We ventured into deepest Englandshire, for a day at @greatdixterofficial and a day at @sissinghurstcastlegardennt in beautiful sunshine, bathed in birdsong, the freshest greens imaginable, and gardens of almost hallucinatory beauty, an Earthly paradise. With all the ugliness and violence in the world, I needed this reminder of why beauty matters.

GOLD! It’s like the Trump Whitehouse in here…not forever though. Most of this will be painted over, with this base just giving a little sparkle from behind. This big triptych is going to be keeping me out of mischief for…weeks, months, years…! It’s a little daunting and quite exciting to be setting out, full of hope, on what will be a long journey of making. In the meantime, I’ve been making some cute little bite-sized paintings to keep the wheels turning. I’ll pop a link in my stories for your perusal.

Final (?) layer going on a new painting of this cold bright windy spring that’s left clouds and daffodils in shreds. This painting won’t leave the studio for a good long while as I’m working towards a solo exhibition in 2027. But I will be launching a series of small works recently finished, to my mailing list subscribers, on Wednesday 15th April. The sea has been a churn of glittering white for days now, the air salted and thunderous, everything coiling and uncoiling with serpentine energy that follows me into the studio.
The sky is blue and roaring. Little clouds race across it. The wind is big and cold and boisterous. The daffodils are thrashing. The bay is a giant vat of glistening white foam. Spring in Orkney.
