‘sambrules - hey’, out today on SoundCloud, Bandcamp, and Nina Sam Bell is a musician and visual artist from the south coast of the UK. Sam has long been a part of the scene, starting labels such as videogamemusic and oob, as well as having a show on NTS. Last year, he released album of imagined minecraft music for the label quern. Following his tradition of quietly self-releasing music and his love for video games, he released ‘hey’ in August 2024. Weaving through video game OSTs and piano roll tutorials, Sam Bell manipulates and stretches audio into a sound all his own. Have you ever thought i wonder what a pokemon that was a bug that pretended to be a piece of grass and walked around on legs that looked like roots might look like (Cloddle)? Or a fish that’s stuck in a plastic ring from a four pack of soda (Frounder)? Or a regional variant of trubbish made out of poutine (Truddish)? Or any other ideas that you weren’t able to visualise yourself or you thought might be a fun gift for a friend? Well you’re in luck because I really like drawing that sort of thing& would also really like to raise some money for @crisps4esims and @connectinghumanity_ , helping Palestinians in Gaza have access to internet and data and stay in touch with each other. So if you send me a screenshot of a donation (somewhere between £20-50) (or just send me the amount and I will happily donate for you!) and I will draw a guy for you! Can be whatever, can be a fully formed idea you had (eg. ice bug that’s a firefly but Christmas lights) or something more vague (eg. I like robins maybe like a magic robin?). We can figure it out! Consider how complicated your idea is and try to donate an amount according to that if possible (Rayquaza takes more time to draw than Ditto) and I will do my best to get it done in a few days! New mixtape & interview! 0305, with @samb_rules , is on behalf of his beautiful interpolation of C418's Minecraft soundtrack - released late last year on @quernrecords We asked questions and he provided answers. On space, time, childhood, and nostalgia. What it means to interpret and what it means to play. The tape is smushed across 4 hours, leaning into those serendipitous moments in the game when you're blindsided by something serene. Big gulps of silence and sudden waves of emotion. We're pivoting away from the written format for our Tapes series, so this will be one of the last on the site for the time being.
