“When I first began Dear Annie, I Hate You, I was trying to capture a feeling I couldn’t yet name — something that belonged as much to the world as it did to me.
From its first scribbles in New York to its stages in Edinburgh and London, this piece has been my greatest teacher — shaping me even as I shaped it.
To every soul who helped it come alive — the cast, crew, producers, designers, venues, Arts Council, and every audience member who laughed, cried, reached out, or recognized themselves within it — thank you. Your belief turned something deeply personal into a living heartbeat: shared, beating, and alive in corners far beyond me.
This year reminded me why we make theatre at all:
to gather in one space and witness,
to question fearlessly and feel deeply,
to breathe together and remember what has always been true —
that being human, flawed and fully you, is enough.
This chapter — this wild year and a half of Dear Annie — isn’t an ending, but the quiet season before its next and new beginning.
Here’s to the next stage, the next city, the next unfolding.
