Texas, as always, featured warm weather and warm hangs.
Also there were incredible burritos, tacos, and barbacoa (not pictured, eaten too fast).
Y’all’s turn to visit up north, next! 👀
Here’s a short snippet of a live, improvised solo of mine at Silvana.
The tune is called “Brother,” which is an original of mine that I wrote about the familial love that grows between people through shared experiences, particularly rough times, and especially in the military.
I have been working lately on using “trombone-isms” much more sparingly and deliberately in my playing. This means fewer natural lip slurs, fewer glisses, and fewer natural “turns.” I am trying to get to a point where the melodic and harmonic content of my solos can stand on its own as a representation of my creativity without relying on my instrument’s typical ornamentations. I want to be fully in control of everything that can come out of the horn, able to use the same air, articulation, and technique for every note. I can still use these “trombone-isms,” but try to only allow myself to do so when they feel artistically truthful and relevant to what I want to say with my music.
This is the result of that. I think I’m getting closer.
What a band! Thanks Eric, Luke, Isaac, and Zach - y’all held it down!!
Do you want to hear more from this show, or have you had enough?
Thanks for reading this far!
Ur the best

Looking back to this super fun hit in December at Fiction! It may have been cold but the spirit of Miles Davis kept us warm.
My quintet will be playing standards and my originals this Monday (March 2nd) at @silvanaharlem from 10p-12a. If you're around, available, and interested, we'd love to see you there!

Here’s a snippet of my solo from last week at Fiction, over my original tune “Air Bubble.”
The band had really found a groove that night!
