21 years in a wheelchair.
Then his daughter got married.
Sam Schmidt was a rising IndyCar driver when a 200 mph crash left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. Doctors told his wife to start looking at nursing homes. He was 35 years old with a 2-year-old daughter named Savannah.
He spent the next two decades dreaming of one day walking her down the aisle.
On April 25, 2021, with the help of an exoskeleton built by engineers at Arrow Electronics, he did it. First dance with Savannah. Second dance with his wife Sheila to “Stand By Me.”
“If you do nothing, nothing will happen. If you do something, then maybe something will happen.”
Sam’s full story is Episode 261 of Corporate Competitor Podcast. Link in bio.
Today’s new episode is with a man whose extraordinary story I had the honor of helping tell as co-author in his new book No Finish Line: Sam Schmidt.
Just weeks after winning his first IndyCar race, Sam crashed at 200 miles per hour and was paralyzed from the neck down. Doctors told his wife he wouldn’t make it through the night.
He’s had 25 years to prove that prediction wrong.
In this episode you will hear his incredible journey including:
✅Sam has co-founded championship racing teams.
✅He partnered with Arrow Electronics to drive a car at 107 miles per hour using only his head and breath.
✅With an exoskeleton, he stood vertical for the first time in 21 years to dance with his daughter at her wedding.
✅Built a foundation helping thousands of others get rehabilitation they otherwise could not access.
Sam told me something that sums him up in a single sentence: “If you do nothing, nothing will happen.”
I’m so proud of this book and I’m proud to call Sam a friend.
