When in Japan, a Buddhist monk introduced us to the notion of UKIYO, the âfloating world.â It's a way of seeing life through impermanence, where birth (SHO), aging (RO), suffering (BYO), and death (SHI) are all phases filled with both beauty and sorrow. Accepting this, they must all be lived fully in the present, in order to reach a sense of inner peace. For us, skiing became a way to explore that same tension : between joy and pain, movement and stillness, effort and contemplation, starting over and over again
