Beautiful design.
Set by a participant during an @fpsfirestationprintstudio 1:1 Wood type letterpress workshop last Saturday...
Using depleted wood type alphabets to nevertheless create graphic complexity and charm...the forme for this one was complex... but the result is lovely and harmonious. We used a 1960s proofing press, adapted for larger format registered printing, to print this.
Letterpress is fun!
@fpsfirestationprintstudio is a lovely place to learn some fundamentals. Letterpress Club is this coming Friday if you want to book in and have a play...

Beautiful things came to @fpsfirestationprintstudio letterpress club this morning. Photo 1 is @printmakerlauraosborne very lovely new (old) wood type collection and photo 2 is @myrakaufman Schmincke paintbox which belonged to her father, a refugee from Nazi Germany. The instructions in the paintbox are in old Gothic German script. Along with being a practical printing space, letterpress club is often a celebration of whatever is heritage in the area of art and design. Conversations and show-and-tell bend in that direction, and inevitably stories are told that also capture human and universal elements. The fact that we can make art with historical artefacts, tapping into the deeper meaning of life that history holds, is very beautiful...
@fpsfirestationprintstudio letterpress club happens once a month on a Friday. You are welcome!

Letterpress home studio. The ladder leads up to my art room; setting upstairs...printing downstairs. Crazy, lovely precarious ascend, descend, with loaded chase... The 'ladder effect' was inspired by the novel 'Heidi' (1880-1881) by Johanna Spyri and the child's hay-loft bedroom; up a little ladder, high in the winds. A romantic and impractical idea on my part perhaps, yet beautiful.

Handsetting books is slow and methodical. Each letter and spacing material is selected, set, each line checked for tightness, approved, and then begun all over again, until a beautiful pattern (text when printed) emerges. In my art room I have an old postcard of a Navajo blanket weaver. Her steady quiet weaving inspires me in like fashion. Her strength inspires me.
On the back of this postcard:
"The Navajo are world-known for their weaving ability. During the summer months their looms are often set up in a sheltered outdoor area..."
Photograph by Edward S. Curtis, 1904. Name of the beautiful weaver unknown.

A beautiful afternoon @thepaperstore.portfairy to have a look at Sue's antique printing press made by H.S. Cropper & Co. Sue's vision for her stationary and gift store in Port Fairy is so lovely, with such respect for the history of all things paper, printing and design. It is very much worth visiting. Very beautifully her shop is in the old Port Fairy Gazette building, and the concrete slab and wooden step you see in my photo is the original place a printing press of the Gazette once stood. There is something very spiritually aligned about bringing a press back into this space. (The wooden step is especially lovely to see. I use a very thick book- the collected works of the Ballarat Art Gallery actually - as the step for my own press at home...) Anyhow, I thought it would be nice to share this photo, for folk who also love letterpress x
