Today we celebrate the birthday of Roberto Rossellini, born in Rome on May 8, 1906 — one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema and a founding father of Italian Neorealism. 🇮🇹 Growing up in Rome, Rossellini fell in love with cinema early — his father built the city’s first movie theater. He went on to shape the art form itself. His war trilogy — Roma città aperta (1945), Paisà (1946), and Germania anno zero (1948) — redefined how stories could be told on screen, influencing generations of directors from François Truffaut to Martin Scorsese. His later work with Ingrid Bergman — including Stromboli and Viaggio in Italia — pushed cinema into bold new emotional territory. In his final decades, he turned to television, pursuing an ambitious encyclopedic project to bring history and philosophy to mass audiences. This year, on the occasion of his 120th birthday, Film at Lincoln Center honors his legacy during Open Roads: New Italian Cinema (May 28 – June 4) with two special events, both introduced by his daughter Ingrid Rossellini: 🎬 🎞️ A tribute screening of Paisan (1946), the masterpiece that earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay — a kaleidoscopic portrait of Italy’s liberation at the end of World War II. 🎞️ The North American Premiere of Roberto Rossellini, Living Without a Script — a new documentary by Ilaria de Laurentiis, Raffaele Brunetti & Andrea Paolo Massara, winner of the David di Donatello Award for Best Documentary (Italy’s Oscar equivalent). Happy birthday, Maestro. 🎬🇮🇹

“Tutto Boetti 1966–1993”—a major exhibition dedicated to Alighiero Boetti—is now officially open. On view at Magazzino Italian Art from April 26, 2026 through April 26, 2028, the exhibition presents a multifaceted exploration of Boetti’s artistic practice, tracing its evolution from his early experiments in 1960s Turin to the large-scale works of his later years. Featuring approximately 30 works, including a core group from the museum’s permanent collection alongside significant loans from the Boetti Estate and a major private collection, the exhibition highlights the remarkable coherence of an artist whose work was grounded in systems, collaboration, and an openness to the world—establishing him as a central figure in the development of Arte Povera. The presentation opens with a rare group of early works first shown in Boetti’s 1967 solo exhibition at Galleria Christian Stein in Turin, offering key insight into the conceptual foundations of his practice. It continues through his Roman period, with seminal works such as Da mille a mille (1975) and Mappa (1983), reflecting his exploration of authorship, duality, and delegated execution. Tickets are available via the link in bio. 📍Magazzino Italian Art
