✶ art + disc design for liyang’s third mixtape ‘weave’ – a two disc set, warp & weft
spent time with agusan manobo embroidery + mandaya ikats for this one. visual languages full of mountains, crocodiles, and a core belief in our interdependence
the central form is an abstracted tinampuso, a manobo motif for community. each stitch lifted and flickering along waxy blooms of hoya, nestled in the pantaron range
꥟ all proceeds from this mixtape sustain Liyang Network’s ongoing work advocating for political prisoners and persecuted activists; covering schooling fees for children of frontline organizers; providing aid in the wake of climate catastrophes; and fortifying the organizing work of those most affected by corporate plunder of water and land in Mindanao, Philippines
I’m really beside myself with gratitude for our mixtape crew in realizing this whole project & every musician who contributed a track! special thanks those who fielded my cold intro emails, the trust and solidarity is so felt
✶ if you’re in LA, come to our winter market tomorrow @ the harriet tubman center in midcity, 11am–5pm to grab yourself a physical copy! otherwise, you can order one online thru @liyang.socal ‘s bandcamp
‘warp’ plays in distortion, rhythmic grooves and intensity, holding structural weight and tension. ‘weft’ forms space and meaning through lyrical passage, ambience, and meanderings from the traditions of arrangement
𒀭 from mountain to mountain, hearing one song of many voices
this solar return my thoughts have been scattered cross the ground like twenty six clumsy grains of rice
taking many lessons from the past year of witnessing the unspeakable violence of desperate, dying imperial powers. forever working toward liberation, forever enacting a future where the sanctity of life is valued over profit
poam from last year at the end, thank you to friends who’ve lent an ear
seed sprawl and pitcher tendrils on kozo 𓇠 I’ll have a small run of these washi prints at @liyang.socal holiday market tomorro at the Harriet Tubman Center in midcity. money raised goes toward persecuted environmental and human rights defenders in Mindanao, Philippines ❦
each seed vignette contains a visual tradition or scene of Lumad practices 𖦞 lugged by California harvester ants dispersing far n wide 🐜
grain harvest, zoomorphic Tboli weaving motifs, Sarimanok apparition, orchid diwata, seedling held and placed 𓆰 𓇢
thank you guys for the trust in designing the mixtape cover :”}
